Don't know if if anyone noticed this before, but Google Maps has started displaying the names of the various Detroit neighborhoods (East English Village, Boston Edison, Chandler Park, Woodbridge, etc). Now we can all put a name with a place.

Check out maps.live.com

It's better than Google Maps for aerial photography (at this time) and the "Birds Eye View" is awesome. Doesn't have those neighborhood names, but the birds eye is worth it.

Google added the neighborhood names a couple weeks ago, along with clickable bus stops that show route names and departure times. Still no street view for most of the east side, or much of anything north of the Davison and east of the Lodge.

Google knew which neighborhoods were where long before they added the labels, though. You could type in, for example, "East English Village Detroit" and it would take you to East English Village. Now that they have the labels, I'm noticing that there are a lot of neighborhood names I've never heard of. I know there have been a number of threads on here about neighborhood names, and I don't remember some of Google's names appearing in any of those discussions. I wonder what resources they used.

This could be a resource...most of the name from above appear on Google maps.

My favorite one is "Fishkorn", where did that come from? Perhaps the old Scandinavian neighborhood. haha.

I always thought it was Fiskhorn.

BTW, Yahoo Maps has had neighborhoods for a long time. In fact, they actually color code them to give you an idea of the boundaries.

Nope, Fish-korn, though I did double check because I have slight dyslexia and it could've been that.

That's just wrong. Somebody tell Google it was named for Samuel Zug.

I think this opens up a new can of worms in a way. There's an example of something that's obviously wrong, but I think is could wind up homogenizing the way we define neighborhoods. What neighborhood is important enough? Alden Park but not the North End? Not to mention the fuzzy distinction between Midtown and Cass Corridor. Meh, it's kinda cool, but it also makes it kinda Chamber-of-Commerce-y, if you get my drift.

Didn't Zug Island start off as Mud Island?

If you look at the Ford Rouge Complex, it's neighborhood labeled as "Ford"
