Hey all,
Im contemplating trying to get to the riverfront concert thing tomorrow. Sounds like lots of fun but same situation as the fireworks - I'm afraid of hours and hours of traffic and never getting there -

This is my first time here in Michigan (5th week here, will be here till Aug.) so I need help in planning a good route there and a good place to park, let the suggestions rip please!!!
Also note when the latest time you guys think it is to try and get there!

Note, I'm in Royal Oak but I may be driving in from Dearborn!

Don't worry too much about the traffic. Coming from Royal Oak, you can take Woodward or I-75 (to 375). If you take Woodward it'll be 30 minutes or so. There are plenty of surface parking lots in Bricktown (east of Randolph, south of Lafayette), and maybe you could even park in the Beaubien Place garage (brand new) at Atwater and Beaubien right near where you want to be on the river. I do not know about the price there. The Tigers play at 7 but traffic is rarely too intense in any one place, and even with the sellout you'll find parking close to the river.

Coming from Dearborn, either take Michigan Ave. all the way to Woodward in downtown, or I-94 to the Lodge (10) to downtown.

Have fun at the concert, and don't worry, it won't be nearly as crowded as the fireworks.

If you hate traffic or want guaranteed close parking, get downtown before 6 and just have dinner. I recommend Buzz Bar, Sweetwater Tavern, or anything in Greektown or the Ren Cen if your destination afterwards is the riverfront.

If you’re planning to see “Grand Funk Railroad” at the GM riverfront plaza, you could park in the Greektown Casino parking structure. The entrance is on Brush Street just north of Lafayette Blvd. Visit the casino either before or after the concert and have the ticket validated and your parking is free. At that time of day, I don’t believe there are any minimum play requirements. The concert starts at 8:00 PM, it’s about a 10 minute walk from the casino structure to the riverfront (if you don’t get lost in the RenCen) so I would try to be parking the car by 7:40 PM. For more info, visit this web site; RENCEN Happenings.

If you’re planning to see “Guy”,” Tony! Toni! Tone!” and “SWV” at Chene Park, there is a parking lot across the street from the park. I don’t know if they charge for parking during concerts or how early the parking lot fills up. It also starts at 8:00 PM. Here’s the web site for Chene Park.

Miken, this forum is usually a little more helpful. Don't be turned off by the severe lack of responses here. Hope you had fun downtown.
