Right now we are basking in warm weather and sunshine in metro Detroit. A major front is tearing east north of us in Oakland County. Take a minute and look due north. There are clouds that got to be topping out at 30, or 40,000 feet. Way cool! |

Yeah, I see them. It's not quite a front, but storms caused by an Upper Level Disturbance. This is 2 of 3 waves that affecting/affected SE Michigan today. In reality, there only 25,000 Ft. But what's making them so cool is the Ice at the top reflecting off the sun. These storms are also being caused by Cold Air Aloft, Steep Lapse Rates and Low Freezing Levels. Unfortunately, my eastside neighborhood missed out on precip today, due to dry air mixing in at the surface, surpressing the Thunderstorms in Detroit, not including the Lake Shadow effect. There's no storms in Oakland County at the time, you're probably seeing the ones either in St. Clair or the severe ones in Genessee counties. In reality, the storms that were in St. Clair are in Canada now. Those may make it in here by 8:00 PM if they cam overcome evening stabilization and the dry air. Just for those, we're still under a watch until 10 PM. In reality, the storms that were in St. Clair are in Canada now. Ok Bullet. On a Side Note The Ann Arbor and Brighton areas got hard hit today though. I saw the scene on The news of how hard the rain and wind was coming down. |

There's a good chance of a strong storm later this evening. One complex already rolled through, managing to strike downtown Ann Arbor mid-afternoon. We had 50 mph winds leading to flickering power, and a period of heavy rain. |

Flint is getting it terrible now. Train spotters are reporting LARGE TREES down and 1 1/4 sized hail. If these hold (they will have to fight evening stabilization and dry air at the surface), they will move into the immediate Detroit area about 8 PM. (Message edited by Urbanize on July 05, 2007) |

Urbanize, I would have had this task done faster, but I stopped to eat dinner. It was grilling when I left, and my wife had it on the table when I got home. I just drove a big loop down Woodward to 696 service drive, and then down Hilton to the hill behind Webb school. Back down Woodward Heights to Bermuda, to Camborne, and to home and din-din. I was posting and uploading at the same time, like some mad fool. Bob's yer Uncle! |

Didn't get any more storms in Ann Arbor but I enjoyed watching the huge thunderheads illuminated by the orange setting sun at their tops, while darker with lightning flashes below that. |

Danny, Where do you see CummuloStratus? Those are CumuloNimbus, while many of the ones that Bullet snapped are CumuloNimbus *Capillatus* Incus and CumuloNimbus. (You could even consider the first one Pileus). If you're unaware of the clouds I gave you, wikipedia it. These two pics are StratoCumulus http://www.stormeyes.org/torna do/SkyPix/billows.htm and actually, Bullet only had one picture of CumuloNimbus *Capillatus* Incus Clouds, which was his one on the thread listed under "looking north at 6:25 PM. The rest we're generally Cumulonimbus. CumuloNimbus *Capillatus* Incus usually indicates that the storm, althoough releasing heavy amounts of air, it still has good updrafts and upper level support to keep it going. Also, they're an indicator of hail and wind as well. (Message edited by Urbanize on July 06, 2007) (Message edited by Urbanize on July 06, 2007) |
