Going by the Whittier Hotel multiple times a day, over the past month all the windows have been opened and it looks like work is going on in the building away from the river. A garbage chute has been erected from the roof of the Jefferson-side building to the ground level. What's going on? Riverfront condos? Senior Center?

I know last year, late summer/early fall Herb Strather was working with the Planning & Development Dept. to iron out the details on his rehab plans for the building. They weren't too anxious to wheel and deal with Herb given his past track record. Herb seems like he's moving a little faster than usual on the Whittier project (sad but true). Must be the infusion of cash and experience he's getting from the other projects in town where he's actually getting things done (alebeit with big help/mentoring from other more experienced contractor partners).

I remember the announcement a long while ago about the rehab of this building. It was a pretty ambitious full historic rehab of the building. Hopefully this is a sign of promise.

Hasn't Kwame's name been on a sign announcing the rehab of the building since like 2004ish?

In 2004, $6.6 million in brownfield tax credits were approved for this structure. It's being renovated into 80 apartments by Mel Washington-owned, Detroit-based Phoenix Communities. It will be known as "River Park Village at the Whittier"
