Posted this on a thread in ND issues, but thought I should put it here too.

"A bright spot in Michigan's struggling economy is the number of visitors to metro Detroit in 2006, which edged up to its highest level since Sept. 11, 2001, according to a report released today by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCVB). The study defines metro Detroit as Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties."

Maybe we should all get jobs in the hotel industry?

That is great, remember tourist spending is a city's largest income. Paris leads the way with 70 million. So if Metro Detroit sits at 16, thats not as bad as I thought. I could see Detroit hitting 20 million by the end of this decade. <313>

It would be interesting to see what the numbers would have been if the United States had not made delaying travellers at the border a major priority and had not caused all the WHTI-related confusion. I mean, the Canadian dollar is worth almost 96 cents USD.

The border is holding back a lot of cross-border shopping that would benefit Metro Detroit businesses.

Yvette248,

The article makes it a point to say that the hotel/motel-staying visitor numbers have dropped by about 300,000 since 2004.

People forget that the majority of metro visitors are simply those that come up to visit family & friends, and stay in their homes, and then there is a whole other section counted that are simply daytime/day trip visitors.
