The Hyrdoplane races are always a fun time at the river. I especially love the Vintage boats. They are bee-you-tee-full!

You stole my "thunder". Not about your mayor, but about the Gold Cup itself.
Late 50's and all of the 60's..... loved it. Miles away from Detroit now. "U boats" are quiet now, but go faster. NO mainstream press coverage. Mentioned in some HOF threads.

Will you go; do you care and do you have some great PERSONAL memories to relate of yesteryear?
Was going to start a thread regarding the GC and this one appeared (no politics for me). In "unlimited" there is an amount of limited entries, compared to bunches of other racing venues. Hope you don't consider this as a hi-jack? Would be there if I could? DELETED FROM KWAME thread..I hope.

I used to go every year from 1974 to 1986 then a couple others after that. I miss the piston powered boats and now it seems there aren't many racing teams anymore. The races used to get live radio coverage on race day. Not quite what it used to be. Years ago I spent the Saturday night before the race actually on Belle Isle. We'ed sleep on the beach then get up and stay all day watching them run.

Ookpik....
....I didn't see a reference to the Miss U.S. on the DRRA website. Is she still gonna show? I believe it and one of the Nitrogen's (Too?) are the only Detroit based boats that have been restored.

As to my pick, it's the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison with Steve David. David wins, Art Oberto hands out free beef jerkey to everyone he runs across. The piston U-3 for second, and the U-16 for the bottom of the river. Can you tell I don't like Dave Villwock?

Doug,

My brother is the co-chairman for the vintage class. I wrote him an e-mail with your question and will post his response.

Ookpik

My favorite boat was U-50 - Savair's Probe. The boat was from Warren and when the minimum qualifying speed was 100 MPH, the Probe would always make the field at a whopping 100.47 MPH! The Probe is in restored running condition but in Seattle. :-( Here is a pic when it visited Detroit a few years ago. :-)

Doug,

According to my brother, the boat that is going to be appearing is the U-2 Miss U.S.1. This is the boat that Roy Duby drove over 200 MPH (then the water speed record) in 1962. Danny Foster will appear and may drive but he is near 90 so that may be out of the question.

Danny Foster still kickin around pretty good for his age! he Macomb Daily article http://macombdaily.com/stories /060707/spo_racing001.shtml .. This boat set the water speed record for a propeller driven boat way back in 1962. The record sttod until 2000 when it broken by a turbine powered boat. It still holds the record as the worlds fastest piston powered boat. 45 years!

Ookpik, I fondly remember the Probe! Bob Miller wrestling that old boat around the Roostertail turn. Bob's suit was always dingy and smoke stained from that old stock Allison. We all rooted for the U-50. Not the fastest, but always finished the heats!
