Longtime songwriter RON MILLER, a Motown staff writer in the '60s who penned many of that era's classics, passed away yesterday at 74. MILLER, who had been battling both emphysema and cancer, died of cardiac arrest shortly after 5 a.m. with his daughters, ANGEL STRATFORD and singer/songwriter LISA DAWN MILLER at his side.

MILLER composed such all-time Motown hits such as "For Once In My Life," "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday" and "Touch Me In The Morning." Scores of legendary artists recorded his songs, including JUDY GARLAND, STEVIE WONDER, DIANA ROSS, CELINE DION, BARBRA STREISAND, RAY CHARLES, FRANK SINATRA and TONY BENNETT.

Another unsung (no pun intended) Motown legend is gone.
