Watson and Reeves continue to prove themselves the most useless council members. It shouldn't even be question be that 126 days after your sixth ticket too much time Detroit revisits cutting time to pay parking fines Christine MacDonald / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Drivers with unpaid Detroit parking tickets would have less time to avoid the dreaded boot, under a proposal before the City Council. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's staff wants to shorten the warning period drivers get before a boot can be latched onto their wheels. But the plan is drawing resistance from some on the council. The city must wait at least 126 days and issue two warnings after drivers rack up a sixth unpaid ticket, before the vehicle becomes boot-eligible and is towed. But under the proposal, a boot would be triggered after 31 days and just one warning. "Our due-process is huge," said Monica Lyght, a Municipal Parking Department manager, adding that other cities have shorter warning periods. City officials said last year that the parking department was owed nearly $30 million in fines, but they couldn't give a more recent figure. There are close to 58,000 vehicles on the list for the boot. Typically, the city tows vehicles away shortly after booting them. Also, the city would be able to sell an impounded vehicle quicker, reducing the time to claim the vehicle from 35 days to 21 days. The proposal is expected to face some opposition from council members. Detroiter Ladell Hill, 37, is glad to hear the proposal won't sail through. He got the boot while driving his mother's vehicle a few years ago, after amassing $500 worth of tickets. He said many people just can't afford the tickets. "Everybody is going under," Hill said. "It's rough enough with the time you are given." Councilwoman Martha Reeves said drivers should have the additional warning and that shortening the waiting period is too harsh. "It's hard to pay your tickets in the first place," Reeves said. "That's a little stern." And Councilwoman JoAnn Watson said the changes would hurt poor people. But officials say many of those on the hot list are professionals, and about half are suburbanites. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=/20070723/M ETRO05/707230346 |

When are some members of CC going to realize that a city needs middle class and upper class to be able to help the poor in the city. The city isn't a charity. Maybe one day they will realize that. |

Maybe since Roger Penske owns a racing team that drives cars a lot, Reeves should consult with him before making a public statement on this issue. |

Also DDS, Jeromoe Bettis is a partner in Bettis/Betters, which is trying to develop the Uniroyal Plant, which used to make tires, which is where the boot goes...and...Bettis played in Super Bowl XL, the planning team of which was headed by Penske, whom as you have already noted, has a lot to do with cars. Maybe Bettis should be consulted on this as well. |

Maybe Martha should wander over to the Ford family plot at Joy and Evergreen and meditate with Henry. The oneth, not the twoth. |

Only in Detroit would a driver who has accumulated 500.00 of parking tickets admit to it in the paper and show no remorse for the behaviour. I guess he knows he has stooges on city clowncil that will let him get away with more. " A little harsh" as Reeves says,,' its hard to pay your tickets in the first place" What planet is she on?? Maybe if they didnt commit the violation so much in the first place they wouldn't have to worry about the tickets... unbelievable, these people know the violation they are committing and could care less. When will these people realize it has to be run like a business, a grace period is fine but this is ridiculous, the kids know they will keep getting away with it and will continue ignoring parking violations, because they can. I have mixed feelings on this. I have never had a Detroit parking ticket, but I have had one in Saginaw, and if Detroits parking department is like theres you are screwed. In Saginaw it took me paying my fine three times to get it finally cleared. |
