What ever happened to the historic streetcars that were removed from downtown a few years ago? Are they gone forever? Seems like they could have been part of the rejuvenation of downtown. |

werent they sold to Mexico? We need a fast action plan to compensate for lack of real public transportation. Those Trolley buses can accually work for the greater downtown core. In downtown Los Angelas, they have a DASH bus system that Could be the aquivalant to a downtown detroit dash system........... DASH C----TAKES YOU TO ALL 3 CASINOS DASH E----RIVERFRONT, GM, GREEKTOWN DASH B----COMERICA PARK,FORD FIELD, FOX TOWN.HARMONY PARK DASH A----CBD, COBO HALL, CAMPUS MART DASH D----MIDTOWN-NEW CENTER |

Downtown_remix I think you're confusing the streetcars that ran all through the city with the historic Trolleys that only ran on Washington Blvd. and Jefferson Ave. The Streetcars were sold to Mexico in the 50's. I don't know where the trolleys went. |

Information on this subject can be found on archived threads here and here. The second of those threads has messages that were posted on Thursday, June 21, 2007 between 5:18 and 11:01 am and which explain where the old Washington Blvd. cars are stored. (Message edited by Mikeg on July 27, 2007) |

How depressing! According to the photos pointed at by that second thread, those Washington Blvd streetcars are just sitting there rotting away. San Francisco should buy and restore them for use on their historic streetcar line. |

Someone on this forum said they had to take the top off of the double decker trolley in order to fit it into the building. Which leads one to speculate that all the trolleys are indoors. I looked at those aerial photos, and I could not tell 100% sure that some of the trolleys were actually parked outside. We need better confirmation than those pics. Or higher resolution pics. |

I know for fact that the 2 you see in back of the plant maintenance building are true electric trolleys. I believe there are three still at ddot, one a swiss type and two from portugal {sorry about my spelling too many beers} plus the 2 rotting away. At least 2 of them had been rehabed by a outside contractor and are in excellent shape, while the rehab was being done they decided to shit can the wash blvd trolleys. It probably was done because the maintenance shop would block the Book building contractors. |

The River Walk needs the trolleys. Belle Isle to the Ren Cen with stops along the way. |

I think from the river through the dequindre cut to eastern market and a larger parking facility would be cool. |

I like the idea of a short trolley line connecting Hart Plaza, Eastern Market, Belle Isle and the Riverfront. That could be a tourism boom for the city in the summer. Ahhh, dreams... |

If the city were to install those trolleys along Atwater from 3rd to, at least, Joseph Campau they would probably be popular enough to cover operating costs. In addition, the portion of the tunnel under Hart Plaza, which was built for the People Mover, could finally be utilized. |

The next time you drive along Atwater under Hart Plaza notice that the tunnel is much wider than what was needed for the street and that a portion of it is fenced off. The original design for the People Mover had it running along Atwater, under Hart Plaza, behind the RenCen to Beaubien and then north. It was later decided that it would be more desirable to bring the route north to Larned, east to Randolph, then back south to Jefferson so that it could pass through the Millender Center. By the time that change was made, however, construction on Hart Plaza was nearing completion so that portion of the tunnel was fenced off and remains unused to this day. |
