I LOVE Aretha, but has anyone told her that it usually gets hot in the summertime??? http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=/20070810/U PDATE/708100427 Citing the heat wave, Aretha Franklin has canceled her Sunday show at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, although she says she hopes her agent and DTE can reschedule the show soon. Ticket refunds are available at point of purchase. |

Weather.com is forecasting a high of 91 degrees on Sunday, with isolated thunderstorms. Guess Miss Aretha needs to book DTE in September if she wants cooler weather! |

It specifically said in the paper (I think in the Oakland Press today?) that she would not be cancelling the DTE date. I guess she's canceled on the folks in Chapel Hill for three consecutive years now (I'm recalling this from memory.) It's pretty disappointing...I'm a big concertgoer (I'm 17 and seen well over 100) and have only experienced one cancellation, when Blondie canceled some dates last year due to an injury to a New Cars band member in a tour bus incident. I think it's almost unheard of to cancel due to weather. (I should note that I don't have tickets to this show and am just making this observation as a bystander.) |

Miss 'Retha needs to be doing indoor venues if she's afraid of melting then. Dunno who put her up to this grandiose idea of playing outdoors in the later summer. |

Aretha Franklin lives in Bloomfield Hills. She owned a house in northwest Detroit that she let, for whatever reason, fall to rack and ruin. Her father, Rev. C. L. Franklin, lived in a grand house on LaSalle Blvd. and Lothrop until his death. |

Nobody gets R*E*S*P*E*C*T on this forum! I'm guessing nobody here has performed on stage with a couple dozen high-intensity lights shining down on you - it gets a little toasty under the best of circumstances. Start with an ambient temperature of 91F and you could be asking for some pretty severe repurcussions for even someone in the best of health. She may be a diva, but she's earned it. (PS I love how the conversation devolved into "she's fat" and "does she live in Detroit?" Typical.) |

A quote from the above link: "It's a strain because you're eating the Jenny Craig-type meals, which are very good. But you can only eat them for so long before you want some barbecue ribs or some pigs feet. Once you get off that Jenny Craig thing and you start eating what you've been eating, it's all over." I just find it amusing - we have in Aretha Franklin one of the most significant voices in music. She still (gasp!) LIVES IN MICHIGAN - remember all the hand-wringing over musicians, and Gordy too, who had the audacity to LEAVE THE CITY and/or STATE? You lot act like bitchy schoolgirls..."her dress this...she's fat that...pork roast" I guess I could understand if we're discussing some no talent bimbo but ARETHA FRANKLIN?? Cause she cancelled a concert??? |

Heat on the stage, give me a break. Why did she schedule the event to begin with. I've seen so many bands give 2 to 3 hour performances out in the sun and then did it the next day. I love Arethea but this is pathetic. Maybe schedule the The Detroit Winter Blast. |

I was afraid to look at this thread for fear of an image like that. Also from the web site, "Aretha has signed up for Jenny Craig to lose weight for her up coming wedding...The heavyweight diva, who will wed long-term boyfriend Willie Wilkerson Jr. next month, insists she knows the Jenny Craig diet works - because she has seen amazing results in the past." The web article was dated May 30th, any updated photos on what the new slimed down Aretha looks like now? |

Jimg has scolded some of us for our nasty little comments about Franklin, and he has a point. I feel particularly conspicuous, owing to my remark, since I almost never pick on folks over their personal appearance, but when someone that immense and virtually bursting with fat dresses as tastelessly, and downright vulgarly, as Franklin does, I feel somewhat O.K. about remarking on their appearance. Why a woman who, at least as an artist, deserves a nearly idolatrous respect chooses to dress like a bargain-basement madam is beyond my understanding. |

Actually, while I stand behind my earlier statements, I do not believe that it is O.K. to dog someone, over their physical appearance, just because they are a public figure. It is her utter (udder?) lack of class or taste, in her clothing choices, that makes her fair game, in my book. |

Aretha Franklin is very highly respected everywhere. She is definitely one of the pillars of Detroit and Motown, right up there with Diana Ross, Stevie wonder, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson. Some of the remarks being made here are totally rude and uncalled for. She's not a young person. Being 65, I'd guess her doctor told her to cancel. |

After looking at that picture, all I can say is that it appears to be a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen! I was at Aretha's "You Betta' Think!" TV commercial promo at Music Hall about 20 years ago (free admission for the audience). She was doing a TV commercial for the hazards of drinking & driving. She used her famous song title from The Blues Brothers as the theme for the promo, and the audience was also in the commercial with everyone raising their hands pointing, just like she did in the movie. She was great! |

Jimg, Funny, years ago on a jazz site I conveyed a story I had read in the Detroit news about how a piano tuner came to tune her piano and it was filled with Cheetos. Chris Albertson the famous writer chastised me. He said he had been to her home and that I was simply making it up. After all, it will be her amazing music that she will be remembered for. Who knows what might be in my piano? |

I wouldn't chastise Aretha for cancelling the show, but I would question her judgment or her management's judgment on having a show in the summer especially if they know she's not going to be comfortable in extremely warm weather. Think someone think! And it's not like Aretha doesn't know the sort of weather in the area- she lives here. One look at the calendar and she should've told her handlers no way a LONG time ago. |

Enough! When I listen to her CD's, she's always 25 years old and tiny, with a voice that would fill the New Bethel Baptist Church and then some. "Franklin is the second most honored female singer in Grammy history after Alison Krauss. Ms. Franklin has won seventeen competitive Grammy Awards. Aretha has also been awarded the Living Legend Grammy and the Lifetime Achievement Grammy as well. She won an unprecedented eight consecutive trophies between 1967 and 1974, during which time the category of Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, was nicknamed 'The Aretha Award'." - Wikipedia |

It was about ticket sales. GUARANTEED If you don't agree Wait for the re-booked show, it will never happen. I have been involved in the music business for many years. Many performers will do anything not to cancel a show. Jimmy Buffett drags a generator truck with him to every show, just in case the venue loses power they can plug into the portable generator and the show will go on. Rescheduling is cost prohibitive, all he has to do is use it once a year to make it pay for itself |
