Just wondering what the status is regarding the Calder sculpture on the SBC Building plaza?
Has it been restored and finally reinstalled at its home on the corner of Cass & Mich?
Admittedly, I haven't been by there in some time, but was wondering if its back. If not, anyone know what the hold-up might be?

Rrl,

That's a great question; I was in that area last week and didn't think to look. I just searched the city's web site, and there's not much- just links. Think I might call tomorrow and pester them.

Not sure if the City would have any info on this piece, as I understand it's privately held, not public.

Anyone have the scoop? Where's Metaldoctor...

It is now the AT&T Building, and they own it (AT&T and SBC merged), so I don't think the city would know of its' status.

It is not currently in front of the building on Michigan Ave.

I still think it looks like an exploded boiler. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

If you have to ask questions like this, it means you need to get downtown and find out for yourself. This forum should not have one question about what is going on downtown if you live in the metro area.

Ray,

I'm not a big Calder fan myself; I wish we had a Claes Oldenburg- he's much more whimsical, but I love having sculpture around the city.

Has anyone done a walking tour of the sculptures
in Detroit, or at least a map with their locations
and a little information?
Also, what happened to Yoko Ono's "wishing tree"

Oakmangirl--Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle has both a Calder

Calder Eagle at Olympic Sculpture Park

and a Claes Oldenburg

I hear they added the Calder to Hamtramck's Urban Disneyland. Can anyone confirm?

Well, that settles it; I think that's now my favorite. I used to see this every day in Philly; it's such a weird juxtaposition against the opulent city hall.

Long...try Wikipedia and key in "Detroit sculpture"; I don't think we have a walking guide which is a shame.

Haha, Detroitplanner.

Catman, GR has at least one Calder, and apparently they're quite proud of it. I admit it would be nice for Detroit's or DPL's web site to highlight some of our sculpture....
