Most suburbanites are repeat visitors. The poll saids that 2/3 of suburban Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties says they occasionally go to downtown. The poll also saids that if downtown has more shops and better transit, downtown will bring more residents. More in the link,

If this isn't a petition for retailers to start setting up shop, then I don't know what is!!

"And mayoral spokesman Matt Allen said the city has a federal grant for light rail service from downtown along a yet-to-be-determined 12-mile route. The service should be running by 2011, he said."

That is interesting.

Good article, interesting study.

It confirms what I've known all along from the private data I've had my hands on - that downtown has a perceived security problem, regardless of the actual statistics... and also, to me, it reinforces that "tipping point" that I think downtown/midtown is almost at. A perceived security problem, actually, is an easier fix than an actual one. I've lined out how in other threads.

I'm one of those people who thinks that it's not going to be 20 years - it'll be five for the central core - Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, etc. the work in some of those neighborhoods is really amazing.
