Just heard from a very good source that a Super McDonalds will open next to Salad Creations. Small fries for some posters on here, but i feel this is huge. Mc Donalds is so universal and will generate much needed foot traffic for other area businesses. Just the big M facing woodward will have a big impact. When all other dining choices fail, McDonalds will prevail |

What is the big deal about a McDonald's? I know that you just moved back from L.A. a couple years ago, but there was a McDonald's in Comerica Park when it opened and it was visible from Woodward. You couldn't really ask for a more visible location in Detroit at the time. |

Remember the hoopla about getting a limited-hours CVS store on the major drag downtown two years ago? In an area where once there were over a dozen dime stores--almost on top of each other? Now there's someone gushing about a MacDonald's??? |

As I stated in the other post about chain restaurants and as much as I dislike the big M its possible that it will (with salad creations) be a catalyst for further investment. These chains are generally financially stable and well kept, these things are important for somone looking to invest next door whether it be more fast food or some sort of retail. |

I heard it was going to be a McDowell's, not a McDonald's. It's a common mistake. McDonald's has the Golden Arches, McDowell's has Golden Arcs. McDonald's has the Big Mac, McDowell's...the Big Mick. They both have two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but McDonald's buns have sesame seeds. McDowell's buns have no seeds. |

^Forgive me if I sound a bit dismissive about your opinion, but McDonald's will not be a catalyst for further investment. I think it says a lot more that downtown has had a Starbucks for several years now, than a McDonald's setting up shop. McDonald's is not a status symbol. The city already has plenty of them as it is... |

A McDonald's you don't have to walk to the Ren Cen basement or drive to? There will be a line out the door. |

"Hey, I started out mopping the floor just like you guys. But now... now I'm washing lettuce. Soon I'll be on fries; then the grill. And pretty soon, I'll make assistant manager, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in." You guys are a joke. No, this isn't a unique, Detroit only business, but it does adds to the mix. I'd rather have another independent business, but any successful business that will serve the people downtown should make us happy. |

not crazy about a ball park Mc Donalds. I cant see walking through the crowds for my Big Mac fix. Neither will a compuware or ernest n young employee. Like i said some may see this as small fries, but this is connecting the retail dots on WOODWARD |

As much as I'd like Taco Bell myself, a McDonalds downtown actually WILL help a lot in perception. People like to see what they are used to, and will look at the arrival of more chains as an extremely good thing. This is a plus in the perception battle. In that way, it'll help. McDowells - hilarious. |

I think the main thing that will help perception is a "Super mcdonalds" when I hear that I think of the big McDonalds in the Chicago Loop with the golden arches as architectural features of the building. I think the distinction between something like that and a crappy drive thru is notable, and the former is welcome with open arms in my opinion |

At least McDonald's doesn't smell as bad as Burger King. Personally, I would eat at neither. |

I'll eat at this Super McDonald's so screw all you haters. Would you prefer that it sits empty? I don't see any of you opening up stores to fill in the gaps. I'm a dollar menunaire and proud of it. Have you ever been to the McDonald's in Times Square? Hopefully this one will be similar. (Message edited by Spitty on September 12, 2007) |

I'm glad if a McDonald's is really coming...I'm just a little embarrassed that this is something to get excited about... The truth is, there's no foot traffic in that area in the evening, so many other restaurants would have difficultly staying afloat there...but McDonald's has the resources to stick around until that areas becomes a little more frequented in the evening, and is familiar enough to everyone to be a draw for anyone who happens to be down there late in the day... It is a good addition to the mix and certainly helps with visitors to see some familiar landmarks, like or not, American cities are starting to look very similar from a retail/restaurant perspective and that is what the American public likes. |

We don't want to look similar to other cities! We prefer abandoned storefronts based on most people's comments so far. |

Spitty: I used to pop into the Times Square McDonalds for some guilty fast food eating... Sure, I like the Mom & Pop places, but in order for them to have foot traffic you're going to need a "draw" and the franchises are a good way to do it. They have an expected level of cleanliness, pricing, and hours. Boring to be sure, but lots of folks don't want to take chances - especially when it comes to food. I can see how getting another "big name" franchise into the area can really help to get other franchises to get off the fence and begin to re-invest in Detroit. |

I agree Spitty. Yes downtown has a lot of food options, but sometimes you want that $1 item, or just get a quick bite to eat. McDonalds does a TON of research when they open up a new restaurant, so that must mean something. |

There is nothing wrong with having a McDonald’s in such a high profile location. There are McDonald’s in every major city on the planet (and most of the minor ones as well). I have eaten in McDonald’s from Paris to Sydney to Bangkok. Sometimes it was a time issue; sometimes the stomach needed something bland and familiar; sometimes they just had the cheapest beer. Besides, something many people fail to acknowledge when they rail against chain restaurants is that most chain restaurants are franchise operations, which are owned by local investors. The owner(s) had to pay for the privilege of opening that McDonald’s because, supposedly, it has a built-in customer base. In any case, they employ local people and pay local taxes. I wish them well. |
