$100M to help region's economy
quote:

Ford Foundation, others aim to move Michigan jobs away from manufacturing

Is this not good news?

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox does deserve credit for shaking the Ford Foundation money tree.

quote:

That more than 60 percent of the funding is coming from outside Michigan underscores a stark consensus that the state's economic troubles are so bad they're worthy of major league philanthropy -- or, put another way, we're so bad that it's good.

"We are not done building the ship we are about to launch," said Hamp, adding that much of the fund will be aimed at efforts to create "high-wage, high-knowledge" jobs in the service sector. "We know Michigan needs to catch up in this area and that we are lagging."

Apparently they haven't decided yet what exactly to do with the money but it is "committed."

I thought I'd find forumers dancing in the street over this. :-)

It's hard to get excited over intangible spending... they don't even know how it's going to be spent. Once they make up their mind, then we can start getting excited.

why not?
You get excited over intangible sim-city style planning just about every day (see, e.g. masturbatory postings about the Government buildings).

Well, then, I'll ask the obvious: How would it be best invested?

Jimaz, ignore him, he's a smart alec that never contributes any posts or ideas (that Lowell hasn't deleted) that have been worthwhile... so all he ever does on this forum is belittle others ideas or suggestions to make himself look big... kinda sad...

Best answer I can think of Jimaz... job growth... or something like the WPA of the 30's... I dunno...

With all due respect, Gistok, have you read the "helping out-of-towners" thread?

Without DR on that, that thread dies. Now it has spawned a life of its own.

Thank you Detroit Rulez! Thank you...

"How would it be best invested?"

Some while back there was a thread that suggested a "Kalamazoo Promise" for the city of Detroit. Seems to me that that is still a good idea. While it would likely not directly effect the economy per se, it would encourage kids to stay in school and help the city.

Yeah, the WPA or CCC sounds like just what we need most around here. It's not as if it were a completely untested idea. That's a good one. I guess that's what Hamp meant by "... create 'high-wage, high-knowledge' jobs in the service sector."

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Dabirch I agree, "spawned" seems to be the best way to describe that thread...

In a bid to direct more of the Ford Foundation's $500 million in annual grants to Michigan, two state lawmakers plan to introduce legislation today that would require foundations incorporated here to give half their grants to Michigan causes unless otherwise stated in their founding articles

Thanks for the link Patrick! Looks like the Ford Foundation may be spending more in Michigan whether a bill gets passed or not.

Could backfire and cause foundations to move out of the state. Think that the lawmakers thought of that? Foundations should be able to do whatever they want with their money, not have the government do that. Am I way out of line here?

Depends on how they were chartered/founded.

IIRC, both Skillman and Merill-Palmer can ONLY spend their money within the city of Detroit.

That's why when Channel 56 moved to Wixom (those bastards!)... they lost funding from some foundations.
