One of my other favorite head-shakers is the 20something Germans here for the first DEMF who asked where our subway was, because they wanted to go to an afterparty in Pontiac. Actually, that's not a good one - it's just an embarrassment for Detroit. |

Spirit of Detroit: ""HOW DO I GET THERE??!!?" Um, just cross the street." When it's that bad, that's when you say, "follow me". I had a guy in Brush Park ask me how to get to the train station (the Amtrack). I think he must have exited on northbound I-75 near the Ambassador Bridge where there is an exit for train station along w/ Michigan Avenue. I always thought that was confusing. |

One time I encountered a female truck driver on Jefferson downtown, lost and sobbing in the cab of her truck. Can you imagine being lost in the maze of streets downtown while pulling a semi trailer? I thought she was Canadian because she was driving a Canadian truck, but it turned out she was from El Paso, Texas. She had apparently been given bad directions to the Ambassador Bridge. So I gave her directions to I-75, but for some reason I had a feeling that she had been told to go to Clark St., but that somebody had omitted the left turn onto Fort from her directions. The weather was turning ugly, and something made me act on my hunch. Sure enough, I found her on S. Clark, where it bends, south of Fort; she later said I was her guardian angel. This time I made her follow me to the bridge entrance. Some weeks later, I got a thank-you card in the mail from El Paso--I had given her a business card at one point so she could contact me if she got lost again. |

During the Super Bowl I had 3 burned out stoners from Seattle come up and ask me where they could score some weed. I wanted to tell them to drive to Newport and Mack and ask for Big Tone, but I just made up some bullschitt and said "uh, over that way near that vacant building." |

Working in Greektown on Monroe St, more so than out of towners asking for directions, you get the locals asking one of two questions. "How do you get to the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice" or "How do you get to the 36th district court." Oh, almost forgot, you gotta toss in "How do you get to the Wayne County Jail? My boyfriend is there." |

Ah the Great Mauser Meltdown of 2007. It's all fun and games until someone finds him in his basement, dangling from an electrical cord. If and when that happens don't blame fudge, blame Mauser's "friends" (many of whom post on DY) for turning a blind eye to their friend's disease. And nothing in this post in meant to be glib or sarcastic in anyway. |

Again, can't we all get along? Why all of the sniping? Is it really worth it? I read a few weeks back about some guy driving 1400 miles to burn a person's house or car (I can't remember which) because of things said in a chat room. I guess the victim consistently attacked the accused and he lost it. Is someone getting hurt worth the "fun" and aggravation? To make fun of elected officials and the boobs who run our lives is one thing but the constant attacks against regular folks for the smallest things could, as has recently happened, drive someone to cause harm. I hope it doesn't come to that but in this stressful age, you never know. |

I've had several encounters with out-of-towners and suburbanites asking for or looking as if they need help. I've directed people to Greektown, the Ren Cen, and if someone is into architecture and have enough time I try to recommend they visit the Guardian or Fisher buildings. Also, there have been times when I've been asked about clubs and shared a taxi in order to point out a good spot [since it was on my way home anyway] and I walked around a bit with a stranger from London who ended up here while "couch surfing" in Windsor. |

My favorite latest? I went down to Eph's a few months ago when I was having trouble with my internet connection...to use their wifi and get e-mail. They were closed early, so I sat on the sidewalk and opened my laptop. Started grooving on it when I noticed seven people walking up Woodward...and one adorable blond woman in the middle looked down at me and asked, "what are YOU doing?" Said I was scamming my friend's internet connection while they were closed...but what are YOU doing? "Looking for a loft, I want to move down here from Flint" So we spent a couple hours that day wandering around, getting her familiar with the downtown and the Riverwalk. Went loft shopping over a month...probably a half-dozen times, and she is now a resident of the city! (and a new artist friend) |
