http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/ A642223

"The area is the home of several first-rate universities . . . the University of Michigan (located in the suburb of Ann Arbor, UM is, according to some, an overly-large state college which concentrates on sports at the expense of academics) . . ."

"In the 1960s, the Detroit Tigers were a world class baseball team. Today, with a new stadium named after a bank, they can still occasionally play a very good game."

" If you make a wrong turn taking the bridge to Canada, you can end up in Mexicantown . . ."

In its closing remarks the article states: " Do go to Detroit - you'll be surprised. It isn't any more dangerous than any other city in the USA; just a little more honest!"

The article is written by Chad Childers, an encryption architect in ITI Security Services at Ford Motor Company, and is currently responsible for secure email and encryption tools.

"Created: 15th November 2001"

At the top of the page. The line about the Tigers was certainly true then.

The BBC is probably the most anti-America media outlet in the world next to Al Jazeera, par for the course for them.

All in all, not really that horrible or inaccurate for 2001.

I for one think it's a pretty accurate description of Metro Detroit (Other than the uninformed crack at UofM), especially when you consider the target audience. What exactly is your problem with the article?

Somehow, I think that was meant for our friends in East Lansing...

I see the forum posters disagree, but my issue was with the commentary regarding U of M, and taking a wrong turn off the bridge to Mexicantown. Further, the outdated article serves as the only description the BBC offers for Detroit.

The article struck me as a Wikipedia article with commentary. And while the article throws in some positive notes, like that which concludes the article, it hardly seems the kind of city description the BBC would represent on their site.

But he is quite positive about Mexicantown.

"If you make a wrong turn taking the bridge to Canada, you can end up in Mexicantown, with wonderful, friendly restaurants..."

It's the equivalent of Wikipedia.

"Most of the content on h2g2 is created by h2g2's Researchers, who are members of the public. The views expressed are theirs and unless specifically stated are not those of the BBC. The BBC is not responsible for the content of any external sites referenced."

Shhh, PG likes to have his little rants.

Many of us were aware it was like Wikipedia as soon as we hit the link.

So, here's the rest of the Mexicantown quote:

quote:

If you make a wrong turn taking the bridge to Canada, you can end up in Mexicantown, with wonderful, friendly restaurants, or driving down horrible, pothole-ridden streets by factories with broken windows, in a post-apocalyptic industrial wasteland.

Selective quoting, to get your desired response?

"or driving down horrible, pothole-ridden streets by factories with broken windows, in a post-apocalyptic industrial wasteland."

To be fair, shouldn't this too be bold.

Of course, the above quotation is entirely true. However, on the pothole front, the same can be said for some of Michigan's main streets.

"The BBC is probably the most anti-America media outlet in the world next to Al Jazeera, par for the course for them."

lol...what a tool! How easily you dismiss every news outlet if it isn't Fox. The BBC is not anti-American....of course, if they kissed Bush's ass then PG would consider them the oracle.
