Deminski and Doyle were talking about this on their radio show this morning, but their take on it was that it plays into racial stereotypes and the comments were ill-advised. My take, as someone who actually lives in Detroit (and I highly doubt that D&D do) is that Kwame, for once, is spot on in his assessment of the problem. When my wife showed me the headline today, we both wanted to blow up the article and place it on the front porch of our neighbors, who have no problem with having their children/men (in their 20s) hanging out on their front lawn with their friends at all hours of the day and night. Apparently, these boys/men have nothing better to do with their lives. I wish Kwame had added "get off your porches and step away from the entrance to the corner store." It might buy into a stereotype, but if the shoe fits, the people he's talking about--black, white, Latino, whatever--need to wear it. |

I agree whole-heartedly. Get off the porch, put out that joint, spliff or blunt and get a damn job. BUT! after these non-workers get their respective jobs they have to realize that a piss test can come up at anytime and they should stay clean... |

At MGM, they try to have 51% of all employees be Detroit residents. They are having a hard time filling positions because of the drug screens. These are positions where you can be a waitress or bartender and make $60-70k a year! |

What if everyone in Kwame's administration had to take random drug tests? |

the_ed, Agree with the sentiment, but in most cases you never get drug tested again. I've had to take a drug test for every professional job I've ever had, but only at hire. Only while I was in the military did I have random drug tests from time to time (about 10) in 8 years. I'm by no means condoning drug use, btw. |

Eastside: Rather than blowing the article up and placing it on your neighbors front porch, perhaps you should mail it to them and use Manoogian Mansion as the return address< |

I think "Just drink the damn bottle of vinegar and go take the piss test!" would've been more helpful, lol. I'm just sayin... |

Ditto, Harper, DITTO! Legalize it. Get the heck off the backs of those who choose the weed instead of the drink...it is so much better for us all. As soon as the administration has to follow every edict they inflict on others, then I'll start listening to them. Cheers! |

So, are you saying that the vast majority of unemployed Detroit residents cannot work because they choose to smoke weed? If you want a job bad enough you'd quit smoking. Job or weed....job or weed. Life is full of choices. What, are you just gonna wait around for it to become legalized?? |

I guess the hard part is not smoking any weed until AFTER you pass the drug screening. The vinegar drink doesn't work as well as the cranberry juice and kidney cleansers do. Personally, I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy but the herb mellows out a lot nicer. And, you don't stumble around like a drunk. |

I thought most of the casinos used a hair test, as opposed to a urine sample. Traces of narcotics will stay in your hair long after your urine is clean. |

I drank a fifth...smoked 1/4 lbs. Two days ago. You can test for alcohol....Zippo. Pee test positive for hemp. B/W, W/B. Legal/illegal substances. Hell, now we're back to (and drop it) the likes of an the immigration issue. (Message edited by 14509glenfield on October 12, 2007) |

The hair test can detect drugs for a period of 90 days. It works better than the urine test. |

I took the hair test for my job at EDS. Clipping underarm hairs for a job is pretty ridiculous, but I did it. |

Anyone think it's not a coincidence that the mayor made these statements hours before this story came out? Kilpatrick law bill: $575,000 http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.d ll/article?AID=/20071012/UPDAT E/710120432 |

I never understood this: What's the motivation for companies to test their employees for pot? I understand not wanting to hire a heroin addict, but it's hard to see why MGM cares whether their bartenders smoke. Do they get discounts from insurance companies or federal tax breaks, or what? |

MGM uses hair tests. They are pretty expensive. They must have a huge cost per hire, not that they can't afford it. |
