Would something like this work in Detroit?

http://reason.tv/video/show/6. html

Why not be pioneers in new and creative systems in our metro area that would dramatically reduce commute times? With the metro region as spread out as it is a mass transit system would have a hard time connecting every area.... but what if we were leaders in private solutions to reducing traffic? It seems like this is something that would turn heads and would increase QOL for everyone in the Detroit area.

As a bonus, a system that was market based would respond to consumers whereas a mass transit system imposed from above always runs the danger of turning out like the people mover. (Not that this means we should give up on mass transit).
