What? No Elmore Leonard? Amazing. It must have been a contractual conflict via his publisher Harper Collins. This summer I read "Up in Honey's Room" - an end of WWII era story based around a German spy ring [the was a real one but they were a gang that couldn't shoot straight] with scenes in Palmer Woods, New Center, Hudsons, even old Farmington. |

I own the New Orleans Noir volume in this series. A nice little collection of stories from local N.O. writers. I'm looking forward to getting the Detroit volume and I hope it's of the same quality. |

We are looking forward to reading this new collection of Detroit stories... Short story collection explores Detroit's seamy underside by Susan Whitall, The Detroit News "There are many characters in "Detroit Noir" -- crooked cops, abusive boyfriends, desperate auto workers. But the personality that looms largest in this new collection of short stories is the city itself. Moody and dangerous, battered and heroic, Detroit is the backdrop to each story and a vital part of the action. The term "noir" comes from film noir, describing the shadowy, emotionally intense black-and-white films of the '40s and '50s, movies such as "Double Indemnity," "The Big Sleep" and "The Postman Always Rings Twice." Murder, romantic betrayal, heroes gone bad -- it's all part of the spectrum of noir. "Detroit Noir," now in stores, is the latest in Akashic Books' Noir Series ($14.95) and comprises a range of the genre's styles. There is popular mystery novelist Loren D. Estleman's hard-boiled detective Amos Walker solving a sordid Rivertown murder, but also Megan Abbott's darkly romantic tale of a Grosse Pointe girl taking a walk on the wild side. Other authors included in "Detroit Noir" are Joyce Carol Oates, Craig Holden, Lolita Hernandez and P.J. Parrish, as well as two local journalists -- Detroit News online business editor Melissa Preddy and Free Press columnist Desiree Cooper. ..." http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=/20071101/L IFESTYLE/711010388 Book release party\Booksignings What: "Detroit Noir" book release party When: 1 p.m. Saturday Where: Aunt Agatha's bookstore, 213 S. I would think they could have some steamy stories on Coleman and Kwame too. Oh, this is fiction right? |

actually lowell, the article said a requirement for entry was that it be an original piece. mr. leonard submitted an exerpt of an earlier story of his, due to a lack of time on his part. that's why he wasn't included. |

Great idea for a book/anthology. I think Joyce Carol Oates taught at U of D for a short time before moving to the U of Windsor. Too bad some of the early Elmore Leonard wasn't included, as Lowell pointed out, especially stuff like "52 Pickup." I read "Up in Honey's Room" as well. Interesting but not as good as earlier stuff in my opinion. I wonder how he came up w/ recent stories sited in Oklahoma during the oil boom days, the 2 or 3 prequels to his last novel, "....Honey." Great description of the J.L. Hudson tea room though. |
