I haven't been the casinos in about 2 or 3 years, but last night my girlfriend and I decided to go to Greektown Casino after eating at Fish Bones. The first thing I noticed was how they don't ask for ID anymore when you enter the casino. I had already pulled out my wallet ready to let them slide my ID like they used to, but I didn't need to. We walked in and went to the bar I noticed a nice number of homeless people trying to look like they were there to gamble at the slots vs trying to stay warm and off the streets. We went and sat by the stage for the live performance and boom, there were more of them sleep at the table in that area with the complimentary water and coffee. It was quite shocking that none of the security nor staff said anything to them. It kinda made the whole experience a lil less comfortable for us. When did this start happening? I know when they did the ID scan for everyone, that ruled filtered out a LOT of people since many homeless don't have them. On a side note, we went to the new MGM for the first time and we were impressed and it was good to see we are on par with other destinations. It is a huge improvement over the old casino. |

If the casinos allow non-gambling patrons in the casino and these non-gambling patrons are not disturbing anyone then where is the problem? |

Vizion, it's been really warm out lately...I can't imaging homeless trying to get into the casino last night when it was warm out. I could be wrong. Also I can't imagine a business letting homeless in...it's so ridiculous. Upinottowa...the problem is that they are homeless. Ahem. Do you want to sit at a bar next to a stinky, sleeping homeless person? |

It was warm yesterday indeed but later in the night it got colder. We left Fish Bones @ 12 and went into th casino around 1230..it was a little cooler. For someone walking from car to venue or strolling round it isnt cold, but for someone sitting outside ALL day and evening, it's a different story. |

"Vizion, it's been really warm out lately...I can't imaging homeless trying to get into the casino last night when it was warm out. I could be wrong" What would you rather do? Sit outside or go indoors get free drinks and listen to live music? |

As a guy who ALWAYS gets ID'd I have to confirm what Vizion is saying about MGM. Me and the wife went there last Sunday with our Ids already out, and there wasn't even anyone there TO check the IDs. |

The last time I went to the casino, there weren't any homeless people inside. However, on the outside I was bombarded by a bunch of them who relentlessly wanted my money, and even told me to go to the ATM for them when I told them (and honestly, too) that I don't carry cash. |

I am puzzled - you could tell that the people in the casino were homeless how? Were they carrying signs written in magic marker on old cardboard that said "Homeless-help"...Were the "homeless" wearing uniforms? Did they have badges that said "Hi, I'm Homeless" I'm just wondering how you could tell that they were homeless. How do you know that they didn't have a wad of money in their pockets? Maybe they dress down when they go to the casinos. And you say that people were asleep at the entertainment area - maybe the entertainment wasn't good enough to keep them awake. What do all of these people have in common: Lionel Aldreidge, John Micel Basquiat, Arthur Bell, Halle berry, Drew Carey, Jum Carrey, Charlie Chaplin, Kurt Cobain, James A. Conrad, D-vine, George Eads, Ella Fitzgerald, Kelsey Grammer, Cary Grant, Harry Houdini, Eartha Kitt, David Letterman, Lil' Kim, Gordon Parks, "Colonel" Sanders, William Shatner....THEY WERE ALL HOMELESS AT ONE TIME. Go to www.angelfire.com/stars4/lists /homeless.html you will find more names here... I would just like to know how you could tell that a person was homeless just by looking at them...And so what if they were in the casino...it offended you that much... I would have laughed had you called security and they checked things out and your "homeless" person was a member of the casino's VIP club! And you never know - someday, somewhere, some one may think they you are homeless...I hope they buy you a sandwich and a cup of coffee instead of judging you. |

Quote: Do you want to sit at a bar next to a stinky, sleeping homeless person? Lots of people who aren't homeless are stinky. How about they do a smell test instead of an ID check at the door? What about homeless people who aren't stinky? Can we let them in? Personally I think smokers are stinky and I don't want to sit next to them. They should be banned from the casinos. Let's ban people with halitosis as well. (Message edited by nainrouge on October 22, 2007) |

They built a casino in one of the poorest cities in the country, who did you expect to see in there, Donald Trump? Not to detract anything from Detroit, but this whole thread is based around "I went downtown and seen some homeless people".. Imagine that. Detroit is loaded with them and nobody knows what to do about it. There is a huge thread a few months back about the issue. Thats smart if ya think about it. Let em in and give em free pop (nothing) and then they aren't outside pestering the customers. |

Wow, taking political correctness to a whole new level. Right.... They probably weren't homeless. He probably mistook an unshaven, dirty dude wearing 7 layers of clothing who smelled like piss and crap because that's his STYLE for a homeless guy. |

I used to live in SF, a bastion of social justice and progressive thinking. Over time, tolerance for homeless people including a cash stipend, lead to an untennable situation where they were destroying the city's quality of life and ruining the tourist trade. Now the city is trying to manage it and I think people in SF are no longer quite so ready to single-handedly embrace every drug addict, run-away 16 year old, convict and lunatic on the West Coast. People don't like dealing with the homeless inside a business. That's fact of life. They'll take themselves and their dollars to another venue. The objective is to revitalize the city and create prosperity and jobs, not repel customers who hold the key to downtown's continuing revival. |

The couple of times I was at the casino some of the patrons could easily have been visitors to our fair city sleeping off a hangover orjust people from Hazel Park. I stopped at the McDonalds there this weekend and I tought it was all homeless but it was just residents! |

Maybe the folks were just down on their luck gambling addicts. Gambling addicts playing at the casinos for a few days could get really ripe. |

"The couple of times I was at the casino some of the patrons could easily have been visitors to our fair city sleeping off a hangover orjust people from Hazel Park. I stopped at the McDonalds there this weekend and I tought it was all homeless but it was just residents!" Those guys are great! On any given morning you can go into that McDonalds and see old guys sitting around arguing politics. You can see it down the road at Hardees too. I remember about 6 elderlies sitting around and one guy bashed Coleman Young. This old white guy, probably in his 80's, started screaming at him. "Hey! You be quiet!Coleman Young was a good man!" Most are pretty downtrodden-looking people indeed but it's fascinating to go there and listen to their banter. Its the old-school voice of America |

I used to work in Las Vegas for many years until the mid 1990's. The boss would fire staff for letting Gypsys check into the hotel. Does Detroit have a lots of Gypsys? I went to the casino and didn't find any homeless or Gypsys. |

I never got carded at the Casino's but I have seen quite a few people get carded, even at the new MGM. I think they only card those that look under 21 or some set age they have defined. I guess I no longer have the baby face look about me... :-( |

I thought the casinos were supposed to card everyone and run your license through a scanner to ensure people on the 'do not gamble' list are not allowed entry. If the casinos are not carding everyone I believe they are violating the rules required by the state gaming commission. If you have called into the gambling hotline and requested to be put on the do not gamble list you are to be refused entry. Sounds like the casinos are not following the rules. Of course I believe this is only for access to gaming areas. Places in Greektown are part of the casino but do not require access to the gaming areas. Gambling man around for clarification? |
