Did everyone enjoy that sunset tonight?Could that have been caused by the So.Cal.fires?

It was beautiful. It was a combination of the leftover Cirrocumulus/Altoculumus from this morning's rain burning off and moving out and more clouds coming in from both Cirrus from the system to the SE and Altocumulus from another disturbance coming across Lake Michigan now.

The sad part was that the skies cleared out just a bit too late for me. I hate gray, raw days like today.

We were able to enjoy it during dinner at Howe's Bayou. Lovely sky!

It was absolutely beautiful. But I hope you were asking that part about the Cali fires in jest. You don't actually think that wildfires over 2,000 miles away made the sunset a little extra orange today, right?

It depends on how much particulate is in the air we look through toward the sun - and the Cali fires are in that sight line - so, yes, it could affect the coloring we see.

No, those weren't the fires... but Ericdetfan got some good photos of the sunset.

So Luckycar did us a favor.

Actually, it's all a simple atmospheric occurance. The sun is reflecting off the cool water droplets and ice crystals in the atmosphere at one of it's lowest angle of the day. Red Skies at Night, Sailor's Delight.

"yes, possible"

Yes, anything is possible. It has happened before as those Dust particles get caught up in the Wind Currents (Jet Stream, Wind Shear, etc.). That's where all that haze in June/July from this year (or last year) came from (from the fires down in the SE).

The cloud cover to the west extended only as far as the Illinois & Mississippi Rivers, providing a narrow gap for the setting sun to shine through:

The jetstream has been far to the north of Los Angeles, leaving the southwestern US under a mild upper-level high causing the smoke to drift west over the Pacific rather than east:

When Mt St. Helen erupted it dispensed ash as far as the east coast. Don't be so quick to assume anything. And it wasn't hard to see either. It was everywhere, it could be seen falling in broad daylight 2000 miles away. I seen it firsthand. Gauging how far the sun is from Detroit, the distance from here to the fires is miniscule. Yes the fires/heat could have indeed played with the light. Not saying it did though. Nothing is free and no action is without effect. I sometimes wonder if the 2 largest conventional bombs ever detonated, by our genius isn't effecting our weather patterns now, by altering the jet stream.

Ran out with my camera but didn't capture anything significant... too many trees, my lens was too wide. But the light was breathtaking, it was filling the shadows with a pink glow and the sky was phenomenal. One of the best i've seen in a while.

Where is your favorite spot from which to view the sun setting? When I worked in Ann Arbor, I used to see beautiful sunsets on I96 near M14 on my way in to do my midnight shifts.

Tonight's sunset was nearly as nice as yesterday's in Ypsilanti and with a nearly full moon in the opposite side of the sky! Didn't have my camera with me, though. Too bad.
