The owners of 6 Salon are placing their bets on Detroit with their newest shop inside the new MGM Grand Detroit casino. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/a pps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/2007 1022/SUB/710220318/FRONTPAGE/- /-/6-salon-bets-on-detroit-wit h-location-at-mgm-grand |

Which begs the question: is 6 Salon opening in the casino spa really going to do anything for downtown? I am sure it does something for 6 Salon in terms of business and bragging rights. But it seems like the most effective way to minimize the impact of your business opening in the city. I mean, there was going to be a hair salon there regardless. Does anyone really care if it's 6 Salon? |

Which begs the question: what’s up with the knee jerk pessimism? I’ve never been to a salon in my life and probably won’t ever go. But I’m glad a new business of this size (20,000 sq in a premier casino) is investing into Detroit and I wish them well. We need to see more established MI companies investing into CoD. If you think out of state or global companies are going to be rushing into CoD anytime soon you are dead wrong. Local MI companies are the ones who are going to get the ball rolling in CoD. We should applaud their courage, regardless of whether or not we plan on frequenting their business. |

You're both right. Detx, it's a good thing because it is investment $$ and future tax revenue. It might also add prestige to the casino. Dialh makes a great point: it is minimum impact. Something buried inside of a casino on a mega-block does not add anything to the public realm and does not encourage spinoffs. If it located on Merchant's Row or Broadway, it would be a building block, and part of a walkable corridor. An occupied downtown storefront is worth a lot more than a space in a casino, even if they paid the same taxes to the city in both cases. |

Hipster..I care that it is Salon 6 (everyone I know has always referred to it as Salon 6...not 6 Salon). Have you ever been to the place in Royal Oak? Salon 6 is a very cool trendy salon with a DJ on some nights, free cocktails, cheese and fruits for the patrons. It could easily fit right into NY or LA. It has some of the best hair stylists in the state. I have got my hair cut there for years. It was the right choice to add to the experience they are trying to create at the MGM. |

Yes, but begs the question, what does it really do for the City and will you have access to the same "Top" hair stylists you could get in RO? Mackinaw's assessment is best. both situations are right. Yes, it's the perfect addition to MGM and Yes, it's nice to have them Downtown, but really, can you "tout" it as "taking a chance" in the City? I don't think so. It's a safe bet, really and the "impact" to downtown will be very little. That's MY opinion. And of course, I will get my haircut, there. |

You all do realize the MGM spa isn't even on the ground floor of the casino, right? It's up in the hotel. I am familiar with Salon 6 (that's how I've heard it too) and that's why I am commenting that their location inside the hotel is low impact. Had they chosen a more public location, I think they would have made a huge splash, because I think they do cool stuff. It's also interesting because their HOUR ads make a big deal of the outside design and street level presence of their salons. |

I go to 6 for my hair. My stylist is working at the MGM spa for 6 salon. (good for me) I think it's awesome. I now can go to the MGM Spa to get my hair done and not have to drive to Royal Oak or Bham. I can have a nice salon local |
