I've been poking around trying to find out what the construction site is at the corner of Gratiot and 375 across from Frank Murphy. No ground has been broken, there's just a bunch of equipment and materials staged there. It's not just a material overflow spot for the casino parking structure construction, is it?

The Land's owned by Greektown Casino. They were going to build their new casino there. That plan was cancelled after they looked at how much a new build would cost. It is currently just a staging area for the Greektown expansion.

The land is for sale. You could buy it and build something nice there.

I was holding out hope that the county had flown under the radar and was setting it up to build a brand new, state of the art courthouse to replace the duct tape and chicken wire FMHJ operation. Just putting that out there.

Is that project dead in the water?

It may be on hold while Ficano is still pushing for his all inclusive county site. I haven't heard anything of it in awhile but Ficano seemed to be very in to having a large county campus court/jail built.

That is a huge plot on the outer necklace of downtown. Ideally it could be developed for mostly residential use, but the NIMBY effect of the jail will make developers of that sort of thing stay away.

So, if the parcel as a whole is marketed, we're bound to get another super-block company hq of any possible size, from something like Crains to BCBS to DTE. I think some streets should be drawn through the parcel and smaller plots sold off for mid-rise multi-use development.

I don't understand why the county doesn't create new jail space to get that out of downtown. Put it underground. In Canton or something.

OK I don't understand... the county jail is right next to the city jail... and the county jail is much newer... So why do we need a new county jail again?

I think there are more pressing issues to spend taxpayer money on.

With the new Juvenile Justice Center, the city and county jails next door, and the city/county police/sheriff HQ next to each other... is a new justice campus really necessary?

If they want to build a new courthouse, that's fine. I'd even want to see the 39th District Court move from next door to the Gem Theatre to the empty Greektown Casino site.

But there's no reason to move the justice campus to a whole new site.

The design of the Juvi Center is totally out of place for any downtown. It's too bad that most government projects are designed without any regard for their surroundings...as if a building with decent height and little setback can't be built as cheaply as all other government crap.

I don't think a new campus is neccesary, especially because of the jobs and foot traffic that this operation brings downtown. I'm identifying the presence of the jail and an ugly building, though, as reasons that the site in question will not be developed anytime soon.

If the county moves the jails and the courts out of downtown.......along with the jobs and attorneys with it.........downtown will NEVER recover.

The other reason that it may not be developed any time soon is the $35M asking price for 7 Acres....
