This excludes the factory and construction workers. How many people commute to and from Downtown and/or Midtown daily for work?

this thread will always come up, and the answer will always be not enough, and a lot less than you think.

Are there any factories left in the CBD or Midtown areas? Not to mention there's not a lot of construction going on in these spots, anyways.

Sounds like you basically want to know the number of white-collar jobs 'round here.

In the 2006 study of crime in downtown done by wayne state the daytime population of downtown was 74,000 with 5,200 living in the downtown area.

That's not counting midtown.

So our CBD isn't doing too shabby when you include Midtown :-). It needs to get better though because even Atlanta (were 2 or 3 times their size) has 250,000 workers in their CBD alone.

Where? I live downtown, I believe I have a good idea of what is (some minor street construction, Westin/BC, Greektown, and MGM Grand) and isn't being worked on currently. Midtown I'm a little bit more shakey on but the only big project that would have any impact is the new student building WSU is erecting.

However, I'm unfairly comparing Detroit to NYC/Chicago where there seems to be a lot more construction or rennovations happening.

Seems to me that there has been more construction in Detroit this decade already (being that it isn't even over yet), than the two previous decades combined (80s and 90s). It certainly isn't limited to the casinos of the Book Cadillac renovations, but also think of the riverwalk, renovations of the Ren Cen (and dozens of other buildings), new housing throughout midtown, the revisions to DTE's campus, and even half a dozen parking decks (for better or worse). In my case of comparison, I am comparing Detroit to itself, not NYC or any other city.

Not bad figures at all for what was an industrial city, with not a large grounded downtown workforce.

And the good news is that downtowns employment is increasing.

Get those numbers going up and more people will have to come into the city and then see how fun and great it is to work in and spend time in.
