It is still lame that they are afraid to call a Christmas Tree a Christmas Tree! There is only one holiday that it represents and it isn't a made up pc holiday invented in the days of freedom "from" religion. There you have it... now enjoy the party. Let's all join in for the lighting of the shrubbery. |

last year, the fine folks at the erstwhile daimlerchrysler corporation extended an invitation for workers to invite their families to a display of trees decorated in "typical year-end fashion." it doesn't get more anemic than that. |

"And that holiday is the winter solstice. Tree worship is pagan. It has nothing to do with the birth of Christ." Pam, Pam, Pam! Yes tree worship is depressingly Druid...but the Christmas Tree is entirely in-line with the Christian celebration of Christ's birthday (note: we don't worship the tree). It was brought over by our Germanic forebears and has been, until recently bizarre anti-Christian times, a stalwart of the Christmas season. To those who haven't experienced a rather relaxed break from the challenges of the day...a stop at your local church can be more relaxing and envigorating than a spa (at a much diminished cost). For fun, try it at one of the many great architechturally significant homes that we have downtown. Many of you may find one that fits just right! Ciao! |

http://www.christmas-tree.com/ where.html
quote:King Tut never saw a Christmas tree, but he would have understood the tradition which traces back long before the first Christmas, says David Robson, Extension Educator, Horticulture with the Springfield Extension Center. The Egyptians were part of a long line of cultures that treasured and worshipped evergreens. When the winter solstice arrive, they brought green date palm leaves into their homes to symbolize life's triumph over death. The Romans celebrated the winter solstice with a fest called Saturnalia in honor of Saturnus, the god of agriculture. They decorated their houses with greens and lights and exchanged gifts. They gave coins for prosperity, pastries for happiness, and lamps to light one's journey through life. Centuries ago in Great Britain, woods priests called Druids used evergreens during mysterious winter solstice rituals. The Druids used holly and mistletoe as symbols of eternal life, and place evergreen branches over doors to keep away evil spirits. Late in the Middle Ages, Germans and Scandinavians placed evergreen trees inside their homes or just outside their doors to show their hope in the forthcoming spring. Our modern Christmas tree evolved from these early traditions. Even if you don't think you are "worshipping" the tree, the origins of it are pagan. If you want to celebrate the birth of Jesus, put up a manger scene. Holiday tree is actually a more accurate term for it than Christmas tree. |

"Holiday tree is actually a more accurate term for it than Christmas tree." Well, no its not. Its just a pc name that was invented in the recent years to avoid anything that might smack of religion. Most people know the pagan origins of the Christmas tree and the usurping of it by Christianity to tie the early rituals to the church. Just as most of us understand the attempt by the pc crowds of today to detach it from the Church by calling it something other than a Christmas Tree. Its a Christmas Tree and will remain so whether you try to rename it Ralph, George or Heimlich. And no, a manger is not an open - double wide festivus trailer. |

Pagans are still out there, so since the tree applies to their holiday, holiday tree makes sense to me. Also secular people put up trees. Christians can't claim any religious significance or sole ownership of the trees, sorry. That's a fact, nothing to do with being "PC". |

"That's a fact, nothing to do with being "PC". " Well, no. You're own attempts to rename what everyone knows as a Christmas Tree is exactly PC. The "fact" is that the Christmas Tree has been used in both religious and secular settings for many generations before you came along. The Ralph Tree or the Barnabas Tree, or whatever you want to call it, have not. Its a Christmas Tree. |

The use of Christmas Trees became more universally popular starting in AD 1840. That was the year that England's young Queen Victoria married her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (a small German state located north of Bavaria). At Christmas of that year, Albert insisted on a Christmas tree for Buckingham Palace, as had been the custom in his native Coburg. When other Englishmen saw the tree, they decided to have one as well, and it started a craze that continues to this day throughout Christendom. |

Let me retract that. If you are walking, the one ways are irrelevant. Go down Michigan to 3rd Street (6 blocks, the last block is a long one). Go right 4 blocks and you are there at 3rd and Elizabeth. That probably cuts 3 blocks off the original directions. |

Any idea what time the actual lighting will be? I'm taking a group of a half dozen or so downtown Friday night, and we'd like to see the tree lit, but have plans immediately following. I can't recall exactly what time it was lit in past years, but I'm hoping it wasn't much past 7:30 or 8:00... I'm taking them to the lounge in Coach Insignia for a couple of cocktails and view, then we're heading to MGM Grand for sushi. I haven't been to 'The Grand Wok and Sushi Bar' yet, but I'd imagine it must be pretty good... |

I've heard that the actual tree lighting is around 8:30. Gotta keep the crowd (and TV audience) in suspense for a while through the various musical and skating performers, plus have some time to wrap up the show by 9pm. |

Agreed!! It's terribly disappointing that the site was not very accommodating to visitors unless they paid $10 to sit next to the rink. This is supposed to be a civic event. Why not make it an accessible event? I heard of some others that were downtown but ended up going home to watch the lighting on TV. |

We had a great time at the tree lighting and nearby festivities. We too started at the Greektown parking garage. On our way to grab a pre-lighting dinner, I insisted we first stop for a drink... at the Well. I didn't realize this was the kickoff spot for Inside Detroit's bar hop: signed up and drank a Stroh's. Next stop was the Pulse -- a very, very cool bar. The final stop was Foran's which was a great location for quickly stepping out to see the tree light up. We bustled out of there to catch last call at the DIA opening before heading to the Park Bar for some Bucharest food. We had an absolute blast of a time and Downtown looked awesome. |
