A friend flew in from Denver for the weekend and we got together Sunday night for dinner. After giving him a driving tour of the downtown area--which he compared to Denver's warehouse district before it was revitalized starting about 15 years ago--we set off to grab a bite to eat, and I had no intentions of taking him to the suburbs. It was about 8:05 when we arrived at Traffic Jam, but it had closed at 8:00. So next we tried Union Street, and were pleased to see the "OPEN" sign lit up in the window, and the posted hours said it was open until 9:00. However, when we went in, a large sign informed us that the kitchen was closed already, but the bar was still open. That didn't help us. We were saved by Slow's BBQ, which was still bustling with business after we left around 10:00. However, you better believe that I was extremely embarrassed about having to try multiple restaurants on a Sunday night before finding one that was actually open. It made me question if I live in Detroit, or London, ON. |

You had it with your second sentence: the action is in the suburbs. CBD and Mid-Town lack the critical mass of residents and steady visitors necessary to support what you wanted. |

Twingos is open with a kitchen until ten, drinks until two as usual. Park Bar is open for drinks late then...I've never gone there when they were closed early. What kind of hours does Atlas have on Sunday? Their brunch is supposed to be out-of-this-world... |

Nightlife on a Sunday is non-existent here. Kinda sucks actually. Without going to a casino, it'd be best to find your fun elsewhere. |

we'd probably have a better nightlife on sundays if we were more caffeinated. |

I agree. I'm from the Toronto area and come to Detroit several times a year, often my wife and I bring other first timers. If it's off hours I always take them to Greektown. I always ask first if they feel like Greek food. If not I take them to Fishbone's - great atmosphere and the restaurant "adjusts" to the crowd size. |

There's not really a lot going on in the suburbs on Sunday nights either... |

Craig, please tell us where is this "action on a Sunday night in the suburbs" that you speak of? Funny that... I live in the suburbs, and on a Sunday night... it's deader than a doornail... |

Sunday is dead most places, city and suburbs. Even some restaurants in Ann Arbor are closed and many close much earlier than their normal time. People eat at home on Sunday nights and it really isn't that unusual. |

I'd agree with Gistok. Aint Bo-diddly squat going on in the burbs on Sunday night either. Even Royal Oak is pretty much dead, generally. I went bar hopping with some friends on Labor Day Sunday, which with most folks being off of work on Monday, you'd think there would at least be some people in the bars. The Nautical Mile in St Clair Shores was completely dead. The Blue Goose was busy, but it's tiny and most the folks there looked like band groupies. Even tried Mt Clemens at it was absolutely empty. The only nice thing about Sunday is I generally can drop into any bar to play darts and drink and not have to deal with a wait for the dart board. If anyone could shed some light on where the Sunday crowd is, I'd sure appreciate it. |

Gistok - look in the Yellow Pages under "tavern," "movie theaters," "bowling alleys," and "restaurants." Venture down to MT or CBD on a weekend or after five during the week and you'll see....... ....next to nobody, because the areas are largely the province of commuters. Great, if you're a recluse, but not so great if you make your living serving $8 drinks or sushi. |
