At about 5:20 pm, Canadian-registered tugboat Reliance reported to the US Coast Guard she had an electrical fire in her engine room. The tug is docked at Nicholson’s Detroit (Detroit Marine Terminals), located below the Ambassador Bridge.

The 10 crew members were evacuated after shutting the tug up tight & calling the Detroit Fire Department. At 5:30 pm, the crew reported seeing no smoke coming from the tug. As of 6:15 pm, area vessels mentioned seeing fire trucks, Coast Guard vessels, & the fireboat Curtis Randolph on scene.

Purvis Marine Ltd, of Sault Ste. Marie, ON owns the tug. Tug Reliance & her barge PML 9000 arrived at Detroit Marine Terminals at 3:50 pm.

I think DFD Fireboat is down. repairs. It costs too much to run it.

She's up & running. She was in the drydock at Nicholson's Ecorse for repainting & such awhile back. This past Saturday, she took part in the Lost Sailors Remembrance service at the Dossin Museum on Belle Isle.

Tonight, the US Coast Guard reported on the scanner, as did passing vessels (salty Seneca & mailboat J.W. Westcott II) that she was on the scene at DMT.

How quickly can the DFD fireboat respond? Doesn't look like that thing would be a real quick mover.

I don't know the Randolph's exact response time, but she ties up at the J.W. Westcott Office just below the Ambassador Bridge. That's only a football field or two away from the DMT, where the tug fire is. So, I would imagine her response time was pretty quick in this instance.

The Detroit Fire Department has maintained a
Fire Station on the river since 1893.
The current quarters is next to the Westcotts.
In todays incident, the marine crew had the boat
ready.The firefighting crew (Squad 4 ) boarded
and the boat was on the way in four minutes.
D.F.D. has a long and proud history on the river.
