well there goes that idea for now. she says they do NOT plan to build a new arena there. she said something about connecting their properties/entertainment using that area behind the fox. "but it will be developed" - an exact quote i do remember. so looks like no arena - but what else would they do?? |

... or a ploy to get the holdouts to sell. Can't do anything back there with Freda Alibri's 3 parking lots or the CC Bar, all located within a possible arena footprint. |

I doubt it, this is nothing to have a press conference about, that Kwame said he was going to hold |

I also think it may be Ilitch playing hardball over a hockey arena... but the above article does point out that the Ilitches "were in discussions with several national retailers about moving to the area" Maybe a little shopping district behind the fox? Rumors, lies, and innuendo. |

actually, marian is the one that holds back Mike from doing a lot of things... There was a documentary that described Marian as the strict businesswoman, and Mike as the one who had grandiose dreams of making all of detroit better and better |

It is a huge mistake for Marian to mention anything involving the sports end of the business. I am pretty certain that there are laws pertaining to the ownership of professional sports and gambling. |

the NHL has lax restrictions compared to MLB, which is why it is permitted for NHL teams (like Minnesota and Ottawa) to stay in the MotorCity Casino Hotel while in town. The MLB, I am sure, would not allow it. |

Personally, I'm hoping a new Red Wings stadium is built at the northwest corner of Woodward and I-75, where the sea of gravel parking lots currently sits. It makes sense to build there because it would unite the Ilitch empire, tying together Motor City to Masonic to the new arena to Foxtown. Plus it would fill in a really empty area between Crosswinds and the Cass Corridor. An article in today's Freep (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20071128/ENT 11/711280314) states, "Owner Marian Ilitch spoke optimistically about adding a People Mover stop for the building [Motor City], which would link it to the downtown -- and also to other Ilitch entertainment enterprises such as the Fox Theatre and the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. 'I think the odds are good,' Ilitch said of a People Mover expansion, suggesting it could link to Eastern Market as well. 'If it was expanded, it would bring us all closer together.' Her remarks are noteworthy because People Mover alteration has largely been dismissed over the years as an expensive pipe dream. Detroit mayoral spokesman James Canning said Tuesday there are no official plans in the works to alter the People Mover route." So who else thinks the Ilitches are cooking up a scheme to work with the city to develop the lots behind the Fox into a new rail transit station that could link the existing People Mover to new routes into Midtown, Eastern Market, New Center...? Maybe bring in some retail in that area as well? Probably won't happen, but a guy can dream, right? James Canning's staying quiet, but he certainly didn't deny anything. I just feel like Marian Ilitch was surprisingly forthcoming and vocal about her desire for a People Mover expansion. So I'm staying optimistic, for now. |

they'd have to double the size of the loop to get the people mover tracks way the hell out to Grand River and the Lodge...It will never happen... it's too bad Detroit decided to build that train back when it didn't have any place for it to stop at...now there's 2 new ball parks and 3 new casinos, and the train only takes you to 1 these 5 attractions It would almost be worth it to save all the money that Detroit pours into the people mover by dismantling it and starting from scratch with a new form of transit that actually connects the places that people go downtown |

Good points about the People Mover's uselessness, jesus, but let's forget that Ilitch used the words "People Mover" for a second. While acknowledging that the city probably won't dismantle the People Mover anytime soon, we can still hope that a new transit line (maybe one that isn't just a big loop) that works in conjunction with the People Mover (possibly by having a central station in close proximity to the Grand Circus Park PM station, i.e. Foxtown) could still be built someday. And maybe some backing from folks like the Ilitches would speed that along. It could still be a total pipe dream, but hearing power players like the Ilitches even mention this stuff at all makes me feel at least a little better about the possibility of it actually coming true. How about an East/West streetcar line connecting Motor City, MGM, Foxtown, Stadia, and Eastern Market? |

Sorry to continue taking this thread off topic, but I think the idea of an East/West line like Mind_field mentioned, combined with a North/South line along Woodward up to 8 Mile would cover the city's big destinations really well. |

Would a new Arena 'Behind' the Fox make sense? Seems like it would be over-shadowed by everything on Woodward... |

Jt1, you are right, but MLB would not allow Mike Ilitch to own the casino even without the sports betting.... MLB has very strict rules on this. |

Nhl has same rules, that's why the wife owns it and she is a small partner in the wings now. Mike can't have anything to do with MCC. |

"Would a new Arena 'Behind' the Fox make sense? Seems like it would be over-shadowed by everything on Woodward..." Exactly! That's why an arena taking the place of that wasteland at the NW corner of Woodward and 75 would be perfect! |

David Stern made sure the NBA was taken off Pro-Line, the Ontario Gov't daily sports betting game, as a requirement of Toronto attaining a franchise. The NHL has had no concerns about Pro-Line. The Ilitchs had a great opportunity to build a downtown casino in the Foxtown area and now they would like the gov't to extend the People Mover. It sure is hard to defend those two sometimes. |
