Blksoul, according to Crain's, details of the new "African Town", also known as the Paradise Valley Cultural and Entertainment District" (catchy isn't it?) will be released this Tuesday at 5:30 in a press conference at the Harmonie Building. Don't think that's the big announcement though. Kwame might want to hide from this one.

There's Nothing Wrong with an AfricanTown. It will just go to show the world that we're more diverse than you think and the whole city isn't just an AfricanTown. Next step would either be Chinatown or Poletown, his choice.

Kwame's gonna announce the following:

"Fellow Detroiters, We've been through a lot in the last year. I just want you to know that I just saved a load of cash by switching to Geico...cha-ching... Money in da bank suckas!"

I change that, This next choice needs to be a Middle Eastern Community or Korean Community (which will best be put in Far NE Detroit).

Don't these sort of "communities" just come about on their own? You cannot make an artifical ethnic enclave.

WANTED: Ethnic people of a specific nationality to fill in a new _____ community. Government kickbacks and the mayor's approval are available to those who apply. Call Kwame Today!

I alwyas they came about through the numbers. NE Detroit does have a Korean Commercial strip and populate along Seven Mile through NE Detroit and the Middle Easterns populate and have one in North End.

I'm still thinking that a new Hockey Arena at the corner of the Lodge and Grand River is a very distinct possibility. For one, they recently starting tearing down the vacated projects. Secondly, it's right across from Motorcity Casino, so would give a nice boost in business during game days. Look at it from Olympia Entertainments stand point. How do they benefit from a location behind Fox Theatre? People leaving aren't going to go to a show at Fox Theatre. They will likely patronize da Eduardo's, Hockeytown, and Johnny Rockets, but that income is paltry compared to the impact it would have located across the street from their casino.

I'm sure the site, as well as the surrounding area, offer plenty of space for an arena and parking. Perhaps most importantly though, it would help fill in a gap that exists between downtown and the Cass Corridor/Midtown area.

Such a project would help rejuvinate the mostly dead stretch of Grand River between downtown and Woodbridge. I just kind of hate to see a hockey arena plop down behind Fox Theatre, when that area has so much more potential to be an even greater entertainment district. Centaurs, Park Bar, and Cliff Bell's have proven that, with a CC bar in the works.

A new hockey arena at the Lodge/Grand River would help spread things out, offering a much greater opportunity for development in the areas in between downtown and that location.

I hope it's not a new arena. Not that I don't want a new arena, because one is likely coming, but that would be so anti-climactic. Most of us know that a new arena is coming, so it would be great if it was something completely unexpected.

I agree. I think it might be a cobo expansion announcement. In one of the quicken articles there was talk of how well the local leaders worked together, then it said, "Hopefully the leaders can do the same with cobo..." I don't know, maybe a hint hint.

Maybe it'll be a combination of the two, with Cobo taking over the Joe Louis space.

There's no way hell it has anything to with Cobo, Patterson just introduced a new plan last week. You're gonna tell me he and Ficano has resolved all the issues between them( not to mention the City) within the last week?

Patterson doesn't have to be involved if they found some other way to do it.

With the city boosters stepping up these last few years Patterson could be made irrelevant to Wayne County.

Sign of the Beefcarver.....hahahahahahahah a.

I'm gonna throw down Cobo.

A new hockey arena at GR and Lodge sounds terrible to me. Make everything close. Build the critical mass. People aren't gonna be walking up grand river from Woodward any more than people walk to the Joe from that area. GR and Lodge will just be JLA Part II, with people driving down the lodge, going to the game, getting back the lodge and going home. At least something near the Fox might actually force some people to get out and see a little bit.

You know, I'm surprised no one thought of it possibly being the Lafayette, Whitney, Broderick, or United Artist Buildings (or the Book at that). He said a site. It could be the Monroe block as well.

Detroitrise - although it kinda slipped throught the cracks, the Lafayette is also optioned to Quicken Loans. And the UA building is part of the Statler site. I doubt Broderick, since that would be little more than a progress report. Whitney, maybe, but I think it will be bigger than that.

I still think arena.

My insider at the Planning Commission says there are a lot of deals floating around in the building.

*Cobo
*New Red Wing Arena (multiple sites)
*The new FBI building across from the Greyhound Station

There has also been a lot of talk about the New Bridges and a lot of prints have surfaced in my department for access to the infrastructure near the old Bridge.

My community group has stated that Matty Moroun has really been cooperating lately with developers in the St Annes area.

If the mayor is saying something big is going to happen...I am thinking it is more than just one announcement. The Tiger Stadium site would be big if we could get a mall or a stadium on it. I guess we will just have to wait it out.

If it is an arena the city has to find the money to tear down JLA in 3 years. If they just add on about 100,000 sq. feet to Cobo where will that be? Are they going to tear down Cobo arena as well? I don't think the Cobo expansion can wait until JLA comes down.

Johnlodge: "Possibly related to the mysterious work at the UA?"

Detroitrise: "You know, I'm surprised no one thought of it possibly being the Lafayette, Whitney, Broderick, or United Artist Buildings"

No fair! :-)

Although this is quick for a B of A move announcement, expect them to move. Their CEO is very much in favor of the regional headquarters being in the city, and with how much positive press Quicken is getting with their move, just think how much positive press B of A would get after Comerica'a move.

We're def. waiting on more news about that, Rbdetsport, but it has already been announced. What we are missing is the details and renderings. Actually, to have an announcement the details of that would make me really happy.

I bet they are waiting to see how condos at the Watermark sell, first.
