I wanna get them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant where they have to dress up for January 19th (Sat) but I dont want the bill to break the bank. I would like to keep it under $50.00 if possible. Any suggestions?

I can't even get out of a restaurant with a bar bill under $50. My suggestion, Atlas Global Bistro.

Majestic, but I think you're going to have to spend more unless you eat at Sgt. Pepperoni.

While more expensive Cuisine is nice. Marios and Roma are both nice - Roma is cheaper but the crowd can be suits or Wings jerseys depending on days/events.

If Twingos is re-opened by then that seems to be a perfect fit. If there are shows at any of the WSU theaters the crowd will not make them feel out of place in suits.

Roma or Mosaic on Monroe in Greektown.
Mosaic is super good and would be like 50-60 for two with either a drink or two or desert.

Surprisingly Andiamo riverfront is not as expensive as one would guess if you don't drink a lot.

A personal favorite of mine that hasn't been mentioned is Lola's in Harmonie Park. If they have a band playing you can't beat the environment and the food and service is excellent.

Did the downtown Eph's close? I drove by last weekend and it looked like they closed up shop.

I would say Roma. There are very few places meeting the poster's criteria of "have to dress up" and "under $50." Dress up to go to the Traffic Jam and you will feel out of place. Ditto for Armando's. Cuisine would be perfect but is going to be way, way over $50, even for one person. At Roma there may indeed be hockey fans in jerseys, but the waiters are going to be wearing black suits, and there's a formal, festive feeling of going someplace special. The food's great, and you could have dinner with a glass of wine each and get out of there pretty close to $50. Check the website at romacafe.com

Are we to assume that the total meal can't exceed $50 or are the receipients willing to put out a few extra dollars if the total comes to $70?

That may be an important consideration.

Small Plates is the best suggestion I've seen on here yet. Under $50, no problem. Nice place, dressier crowd.

From what everyone has said I like the Lola's suggestion. They would be going to dinner at around 7:00p.m. on January 19th (Sat). Would they have live music then? If so what kind?

I am sure they would have music on a Saturday. If that is the choice you may want to make reservations if it is during the auto show.

The music is usually along the lines of a 3 piece jazz band. What appeals to me is that unlike many places that have jazz bands playing the band is a focus of attention during a great meal, not just background music.

It is in the old Hunter House space if you know where that is.

No idea. I'm not even sure if that is during the auto show. Anyone know if the auto show is the weekend of the 19th?

One other point. Since it appears that you are doing something special for the people you are setting up I would assume it is a birthday/anniversary or special trip. I would recommend tht if it is a birthday or anniversay that you tell the owners or hostess when you make the reservation. Maybe they can plan a little something special for them.

The 19th may be the preview gala so that a lot of the people may be at the corporate sponsored parties and banquet facilities and restaurants/bars may not be as packed.

I haven't been to the auto show and don't know if the first or second weekend is the one that packs downtown places.

Hopefully someone here can help.

I didn't know about Lola's. I might try it myself when I'm in town over the holidays. Another nice spot that gets overlooked except for the Fox theater crowd is the Foxtown Grille.
Good entrees from $15-30, dressy but casual, and a nice view of the action on woodward. I had the best veal medallions ever there a couple of years ago.

I'd also suggest Union Street, which is casual and inexpensive (Filet Mignon is maybe $22). They are affiliated with The Inn on Ferry and offer all hotel guests a discount.

My wife and I used to frequent the Cajun Quarter on Sandwiche street in Windsor years ago.
They had the best blackened prime rib and the cajun martinis were outta sight! I loved going there.
The food was wonderful and it was reasonable.

I also recommend Union Street. It's hard to find a place that's "under $50" and considered dressy, but Union street more or less fits the bill. It's a very eclectic crowd - you'll see anything from jeans to suits, and attire that's normal to just plain out there. The food is very good, and it's just a very comfortable atmosphere. Not too far from the DIA and the inn, either.

Vincente's, Atlas bistro, Sweet Lorraine's or any of the restaurants in the MGM Grand. Not dressy, but Baile Corg. is really good!
