Buried in the Detroit News yesterday... Not that I ever went there (because i'm a veggie) but it would be the loss of an institution... Carl's Chophouse to maybe convert to a strip club:

I think it would be best to just close it down... on second thought, it might be a good location for the MCC guest looking for a lil booty clapping less than a stone's throw away.

NO! We can't lose another great Detroit tradition. Pretty soon we will have no great restaurants left.

Perfect example of why casinos don't save cities.

That said, I doubt that place will end up as a strip club...

Yeah, I just read this and it sucks, but we all saw this coming. Casinos do not equal prosperity for us all. Hell, half of the time the ramp to Grand River was closed; that was a sign right there.

But there's no way they'll get a license without greasing the wheels... and since they already owe back taxes, I don't see that happening.

We should all come together and go down there to buy $30 steaks!

YEAH! We should all go there once or even never and then mourn it being gone!

My girlfriend and I go there annually on NYE. We always make reservations but we never need them. They are usually about 70% full.

It's sad that they are facing closure but people getting gung-ho and nostalgic won't save the place unless we all plan on going every week. No one's thought of it in the past few years....

It's capitalism at it's finest. You need to be able to compete with the chains in order to make it. I can't think of EVER seeing a Carl's ad or commercial on TV, web, or print. Gotta think outside the box in these tough times...

I have never been there, the owner seems like he is just looking for attention, like in the 90's when he threatened to move, and the place just sounds worn down. You can't not renovate a place like that and expect the movers and shakers to keep coming.

^ You have to give people what they want. A restaurant looking the same as when it was opened can't compete with the McChains of today.

Correction it can look the same, it just needs to have carpet without steer heads and blue ribbons. You know something classier. Old can be great but there is a fine line between old, retro, and dated.

I get a kick out of all the people mourning the passing of a Detroit institution and then after being asked when the last time they went there, say things like, "Oh, I'm vegetarian" or "Can't, too expensive" or "I go to (insert other restaurant name here)". This place is closing simply because the quality and experience didn't match up with the cash that you needed in order to eat there.

Things come and go and the majority of change is good. In this case, it's done for the simple fact that no one wants to eat a moderately good meal (Yes, I have been there 4 times) simply for nostalgia when there are better alternatives. If all we ever did was hold onto the past, what chance would we ever have in establishing the Carl's of the future?

Bring in Gordon Ramsey.
I've never seen an ad for the Roma Cafe but they have not changed since whenever and they don't advertise either.

No, they're just going to replace their current crop of waiters with Umpa Lumpas.

The place is a little pricey, but there are still reasonably priced items on the menu beside steak and lobster.

I think the owner should invest a few bucks in the building. The rest rooms need an overhaul. Some new furniture and carpeting would also help. You need to spend money to make money. The place is huge. Cut the size in half and reduce overhead.

If people are across the street spending money like drunken sailors then they can certainly afford a good steak at Carl's. It is one hell of a lot cheaper than Ruth Chris or Capital Grill.

Unfortunately, Drankin and Vizion, Carl's wasn't a great place by any stretch.....The last time I was there, the carpet was so stained and buckled, it was embarassing even to me....there was a strange smell in the place, and the paneling on the walls and the burn holes in the tablecloths were just crappy...not "nostalgic"

But I'm sure he's not going to a strip club.

To expand on Danny's explanation of an Oompa Loompa, they were characters in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory".

Like Munchkins in their own way.

Is our chophouses in Detroit are becoming extinct? Carl's Chophouses is on the list. Look like fatty fast foods is king of the world.

I'm a big fan of Carl's and I do not think it's expensive _ the queen size cut of prime rib with soup, salad, potato and that weird tray on the table for about $26! The atmosphere is great. Tackier than mario's, but Mario's has always seemed to do more for its customers. Will it close? I don't know. Maybe this is the way for the owner to get some support --- and it would be cool if the casino comped meal at his place. Those casinos, besides Greektown, only care about themselves and NOT the community. Maybe Motor City can be the exception.

I wonder why development of the surrounding area near MCC has not taken off, especially since they announced this would be their permanent site? Carl's really needs to remodel. I was a contract worker for DTE at their Noble site and went by Carl's all the time. The potholed parking lot with rusty razor wire fence and the cheap Bud sign in the front window hardly looked like a place I would take a date to impress her!

If this proposal becomes a reality, this would not be Frank's first venture into strip clubs. When he first bought Mario's, he opened a strip club, which, I believe was on Woodward north of 6 Mile. Can't recall the name of the place, and it did not last very long. One of his current waiters at Mario's was the "chef" at the club for a while.

This is too funny and too sad:

quote:

"It's just so wrong," said Eileen Trombley Glick, a former Detroiter who runs a Web site called .com. Trombley Glick recalls saving up for a before-prom dinner at Carl's.

What makes it funny or sad - The person they found to quote and whine about the imminent closure doesn't even live in Michigan anymore. She, just like so many others left then has the gall to whine about how sad it is.

Hey jackass - you are just one of many that have helped bring on the closures.

People like Ms. Glick make me sick. Sorry Ms. Glick but your opinion carries no weight but she did manage to whore out her website (with lots for sale) to the News for free advertising.
