How far from the top of the tunnel to the bottom of the river. |

From Wikipedia The Detroit–Windsor Tunnel was constructed of sections of steel tube floated into place and sunk into a trench dug in the river bottom. The river section of the tunnel was connected to bored tunnels on both banks. The tubes were then covered over in the trench by 4 to 20 feet (1.2 m to 6.1 m) of mud. Because the tunnel essentially sits on the river bottom, there is a wide no-anchor zone enforced on river traffic. |

Which tunnel are we talking about? The highway or the railroad? (The railroad is actually 2 tunnels side by side, BTW). |

I'm confused. If the tunnel was placed in a TRENCH dug on the river bottom and covered by 4-20 feet of mud, then how can the tunnel "essentially be sitting on the river bottom"? |

I'm pretty sure this is meant to be a comparison to a bored tunnel |

"I'm confused. If the tunnel was placed in a TRENCH dug on the river bottom and covered by 4-20 feet of mud, then how can the tunnel "essentially be sitting on the river bottom"?" It's all relative. Is it sitting on the river bottom? No. But drop an anchor from a Great Lakes freighter into that 4 - 20 feet of mud over the tunnel and it will be as if the anchor was dropped onto the tunnel itself. |
