So I was spun around today in Troy - some get lost Downtown, I get lost out there - I went to a meeting on Big Beaver, and didn't realize that not only did Big Beaver become east and west at Livernois, but the oddest thing is that at Livernois the odd and even Big Beaver addresses switch sides. West of Livernois, the numbers are even on the south; and east of it, the numbers are odd on the south side of the street. Are there any other areas in the region like that? I had never noticed that before anywhere in all of my travels, and it seems like a pretty idiotic thing to do, but I could be wrong. |

Old hat! Nothing at all new about that. Some Detroit addresses shift also depending on what side of John R. |

Heck, Woodward use to renumber for each suburb you entered. It took them forever to figure out that numbers go higher than 4 digits. |

Addresses do that all over the country. When you cross the dividing line (east-west, north-south), generally even numbers are on the right and odd numbers on the left as you travel AWAY from that line. So, in Detroit, east-west streets have even numbers on right as you go east or west from Woodward (or John R above 6 Mile). So, if you are traveling straight across that line, the numbers appear to flip because you were traveling inbound and then switch to outbound after you cross the line. Obviously, Livernois must be the east-west dividing line for Troy. It's a little tricky in Detroit because some streets are not clear as to whether they are an east-west or north-south street (like out on far east side beyond Kelly near Whittier & Morang), but the principle is the same. Anyway, that system is fairly standard in cities across the U.S. Check it out sometime as you travel. |

The Detroit numbering system...good for many miles into the north and west burbs.... (address-5000)/2= mileroad ex: (30000woodward-5000)/2= 25000/2= 12500 (between 12 13 mile roads) or 12 mile road 12(000) x 2 =24000 + 5000=29000's start north of twelve mile) This works north to at least Romeo(some towns such as Royal Oak, Romeo, etc have their own numbering system as they predated the Detroit renumbering system of the 1920's.) |

Using Lat/Long coordinates instead would put an end to so many of these problems. But what fun is there to that? |

Actually the numbering system goes to Bordman Rd. (38 Mile!) This is the reason the small town of Memphis has the worlds highest address! |

quote:The Detroit numbering system...good for many miles into the north and west burbs.... (address-5000)/2= mileroad Restated: Address = 2(Mile Road) + 5000 One benefit of knowing many of the hundred blocks in Metro Detroit enables anyone to detect errors in the various schemes some put forth for Metro Detroit's addressing. Knowing that Ford Rd. (0 Mile Road) is 5400 North, the above scheme listing 5000 as the coordinate for 0 Mile Road **HAS** to be wrong... Ford & Wyoming |
