Welcome. How refreshing to see such a friendly introductory post and nothing too strange or extreme. Do you live in Detroit? And does your screen name having anything to do with going to UM?

UMbound,

That doesn't matter. Your parents will be dropping in on you, unannounced, every other weekend!

NMU '87, '88 (MBA). My parents called and warned me before they drove 8 hours! My sister (UM) and brother (WMU); they'd just show up unannounced!

Nice, JohnLodge.

Umbound, congrats on getting in. I followed a similar route, transferring in from Wayne State. You won't regret it. Except now I am UM out-bound, about to graduate.

Kevgoblu tells no lies.

Never been, Umbound, but you'll find that I have a strong eastside bias.

Architecture is a great field. Very cool.

My father has a liquor store on the eastside its on Hoover between 7 and 8 mile, its called Hoover Market. I hope one day to become the next Albert Khan and design something in Detroit but my love for the city is slowly fading though...

As an architecture student why Albert Khan? I find its best not to be the next anything except yourself, you will find yourself alot happier that way. And do you mind if I ask why your love for the city is fading? To end good luck and I only hope that you enjoy your time at UM in the architecture school as much as I do at UDM.

Well 6nois i am just fed up of working in my dads liquor store's because of the dangers of working with crackheads, murderers and dirty racist cops everyday and just working in the city. Now my dad and mom want me and my siblings to go to school and leave the city, i used to want to want to come back and TRY and make the city better after i get my degree, but overall the city really does not like my people to so why bother? oh and Alfie my dad owns that Citgo at 7 and Southfield but its NE corner...

Well take sometime and get away, but make sure you don't just turn your back on the city, which can be an astounding place. A place that is architecturally relevant, and presents choices of amazing scope within the field.

I agree with 6nois.

Not living in the city has only made me want to get back more, and appreciate when I can go there.

I would say that being like Kahn is a pretty good plan.

Happy Birthday!

I think you'll find a new appreciation for the Architecture of Detroit and it's surroundings as you dig deeper into your education.

Best of luck!

When you say "overall the city really does not like my people" I wonder if you're filtering your view through the various crackheads and not-too-bright racists you encounter on the job. That could skew your perception a bit.
I'd guess everybody here is totally cool with the Chaldean community. And most aren't crackheads from what I can gather. :-)

You are like 60% percent right Diehard its so much more i can say but i don to want to say it on the forum thats why, but i understand what you mean i have heard stuff like "Dis business should be ran by our peoples, not yo's people its our neighborhood" The only ones that say that are the Elderly people and the middle aged people.
