This should serve as inspiration for Detroit. I'm going to Newark a week from today. |

It looks like it's "Broken Windows" in practice: From the article: "McCarthy attributes the drop in homicides to a broader strategy to fighting crime that includes prosecuting petty crimes, like loitering and public drunkenness, as well as more serious ones." |

Last year I took the train to New York City from Trenton and I remember a large sign that you could see from the train at Newark station. It read as follows: HELP WANTED: to stop the killing of Newark's school children That billboard was not good for tourism, but it did drive home the point. |

I guess I got the details wrong -- and I guess I was not the only person to see that sign! |

Detroit needs this kind of broken windows policing. But instead of demanding that, we demand that people:

Newark has been attracting a whole new generation of Hispanics. They are really trying to revitilize. Maybe something really is happening to change things there. It is hardly a large city, compared to Detroit. jjaba. |

Johnlodge, I think that "stop snitching" thinking is part of the criminal culture more so than the average person's thinking. Sure, there are those that won't report a crime, but it's generally not because they don't want the criminal to get in trouble but because of fear of their own safety. I think a few knuckleheads started this "stop snitching" nonsense and it was blown way out of proportion. Or maybe I'm just old and out of touch? |

I worked at UPenn's school of medicine and a med student came in wearing a stop snitching shirt. My blood boiled. I wonder if he'll still be wearing that shirt after his ER rotation dealing with babies who are the victims of drive-bys. Someone smart enough to get into an ivy league med school showing his ignorance. |

"There was a fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man by an off-duty Newark police officer on February 3. But Newark police spokesman Lt. Todd McClendon said that doesn't count as a homicide under the FBI's reporting guidelines" What are the FBI's guidelines regarding murder? |

http://www.nj.com/news/index.s sf/2008/02/initial_review_find s_fatal_sho.html Here's the story on that Feb 3rd shooting, I don't know what the guidelines are, but this definitely doesn't sound like murder to me. |
