Very good job, French777. I'm not one to judge these things but it looked professional to me. It will be interesting to watch the view counter. I clicked the first link and it said I was the first viewer. Yeah, I think the counter might not work. Do you have to switch it on? (Message edited by Jimaz on February 21, 2008) |

Not bad, but "Blinded by the Light" was done by Manfred Manns Earth Band not ELO. |

Good job French (useless trivia-Blinded by the Light was written by Bruce Springsteen. Manfred Mann mispronounced the lyrics and deuce, referring to a deuce coupe car, sounds like douche. Therefore French's song selection fits the NAIAS -sort of) |

I liked it, too. I agree that some Detroit music would be a good thing, but be careful with that. Just 'cause it's Detroit music doesn't mean it will make a good match for the video. Shoot, I think "Five Foot One" by Iggy Pop would be just dandy, but that's just me. |

Never introduce your work by saying "It's not very good". If you are not happy with it you could say: "This is a work in progress" Looks far better than the stuff I shot at 16! Keep them coming. |

You did a nice job. Have you ever taken a photo class? I took a couple in college just for fun, it was very rewarding; it seems like you'd enjoy it. Anyway in that class my buddy and I toyed with the idea of shooting the nice neighborhoods. Downtown already gets a lot of publicity, but I always thought a neat project would be a compilation of only the best of Indian Village, Palmer Woods, Corktown, EEV, Sherwood, Rosedale, Grandmonts, the list goes on...would be interesting. Many suburbanites have no idea Detroit has ANY nice neighborhoods. Put some Mozart in the background and really make their heads spin. Just a thought. |

Yeah Deteamster I have never taken a Photo class but with the new Education Requirements by the State it is so hard to fit in electives without taking one or two over the summer though. I only have room for French 3 and Symphony Band. That idea about the Neighborhoods is a Great idea! |

COMMENTS ON THE FIRST VIDEO YOU POSTED: What program did you use to put that video together? Its layout is in general fine, but with even a simple program such as Adobe Premiere, you could add and do a lot. For example, too many still image can get boring. If using a still image it helps to zoom in or pan to give more of an illusion of movement. This might for example have worked out well on your "Detroit Princess" shot--start out at the level of the logo on the side of the boat, and zoom out to show the whole boat. This could easily be done. Also in Premier, you can add little sound clips. It might be useful in still image to add in a clip of people making noise in the background (maybe even cheering at like a sporting event for example) behind the music. Additionally, not every scene that you show deserves the same amount of screen time--that might help to shorten up the video. Finally, Adobe Premiere can really help with simple transitions between still images. P.S. I just Googled for Adobe Premier, and the cost is like $799! So I would suggest not getting that, but nonetheless, maybe in some class when you get to college (or maybe just getting a cheaper earlier version of the program for yourself). |

Interesting video....just I don't get why do you say Rustbelt????? This area is a rustbelt area..no offense to you and your video. I just see alot of the urban decay that has overtaken many parts of Detroit. Some parts of downtown area nice...put I wouldn't say it's 100% great. I do like to say that I share your positve attitude for seeing this area come back to some glory. Maybe if we get rid of some of these corrupt politicans that might help out. |

French777- I teach media, and I think it is cool that you are getting excited about the videos you have been editing. Here are a couple of ideas you can try on your next video: If you are using MovieMaker, you can see the "beats" in the soundtrack that shows the audio wave pattern. Zoom in, then adjust the point that a clip cuts to the next one by dragging the little "handle" at either end of the clip. Line it up with the beat in the soundwave, and it will change in time to the music. Try cutting a few pictures in a row really short, like on every beat, then let the next few change more slowly, like every four beats. You can also change between cuts (like the ones you used on the riverwalk video) and dissolves or fades. Those are the basic transitions. If you overdo it on the fancy ones, called "wipes," it can be too much to watch for very long. On audio, you can easily do cross-fades. When you want to end a song and go to the next one, drag out the first song so it ends just a little after the spot you want it to end. Then, right-click on the audio clip and choose "fade out." Then, drag the second audio clip so it begins where you wanted the first one to end. Now they overlap a little. Right click on the second one, and pick "fade in." If you are using iMovie, you can do the same thing, but the techniques are just a little different. A slow zoom on a still picture is really cool. It is listed under effects, and is called "ease in" or "ease out." If you ease in on one picture, then ease out on the next one. That makes it flow well. On a Mac in iMovie, the effect is called "Ken Burns Effect" for the producer who created "The Civil War" and other documentary films. Have fun, and keep up the good work! |

I think your video needs a bit of "Fine Tuning". There is potential, but you have headings that don't match up with the content, and you should probably drop the background audio and make the music more prominent. |

I think an interesting music selection would be ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky" It parallel's Detroit in a way. "Runnin' down the avenue, see how the sun shines brightly in the city on the streets where once was pity" "please tell us why you had to hide away for so long? Where did we go wrong" |
