Anybody remember any children's songs of a local nature? I remember learning a song about the "Indian Names in Michigan". It was a fun song, because as a 3rd grader, it was a real challenge to say names like Michilimackinac. I can remember the tune a bit, but not the words. Something like "Listen to the sounds of the Indian names in Michigan, in Michigan."

Also this may not have been a local thing so much, but there was:

I'm a little hunk of tin
Nobody knows where I have been
I've got four wheels and a running board
I'm a four door, I'm a Ford.

Honk honk, rattle rattle, clank clank, BEEP BEEP.
(sounds more like a Dodge?)

Seems Detroit enough to me.

wow, i vaguely recall that indian names song! i'm nearing my 30th birthday - so i would have been in elementary school in the late '80s to learn that one.

something with the chorus "mich-i-gan-eye-oh" is trying to make its way through the fog of my memory...

For a second I thought you where all talking about that CD called kids songs. Everytime I see that commerical it makes me laugh that people actually buy stuff like that. Im originally from the garden state, don't know any new jersey ones. Unless you count the Misfits, Frank Sinatra, Bon Jovi & the Boss!

John - I remember singing that song at Girl Scout camp. I think we sang the second to last line "I'm no Dodge and I'm no Ford" or "I'm no Dodge, I'm a Ford." I can't remember exactly what it was, but it probably just depended on who was singing....

Also, I think we sang "honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep." Minor details.

Also sang it as a girlscout (not in Michigan though,) same refrain as Psychesc, plus a second verse something like...

Got no windshield, got no brakes, all I got is a small earthquake.

I found a reference to it in this book. I'd like to find it, too.

They still sing it in Girl Scout camp:

Hunk of Tin

I'm a little hunk of tin
Nobody knows what shape I'm in
I've got four wheels and a running board
I'm not a Chevy, I'm a Ford

Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep

Grandpa's beard is long and grey
It gets longer every day
Grandma eats it in her sleep
Says it tastes like shredded wheat

Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep

I'm a little acorn round
Lying on the cold, cold ground
Everybody steps on me
That is why I'm cracked you see

Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep

I'm a little TNT
I'm as cute as I can be
I can sing and I can dance
I wear ruffles on my (oops, boys, take another guess)
I wear ruffles on my dress

Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep

Actions:

Honk: Pull your earlobe
Rattle: Shake your head back and forth quickly
Crash: Hit your chin with the heal of your hand
Beep: Hit your nose with your fingers

Three-six-nine
The goose drank wine
The monkey chewed tobacco on the streetcar line.
The line broke,
The monkey got choked,
They all went to heaven in a little rowboat.

How about Sweet Sixteen pop?? I use to remember getting these at the local store around the corner in the 50's. Great deal as you got 16 ounces instead of 12 on a Pepsi or 8 in a Coke.
