It's not in the CBD, but the best French Onion Soup I've had in Metro Detroit is at Fergie's Fish and Chips in Lincoln Park. If you like, they can serve it with melted cheese on top, which is delicious!

This will not help you, but indulge me with a little nostalgia

Growing up our family ate many a Sunday Dinner at Meadowbrook Hall. They used to have "open dining" on Sundays(maybe still do??). Anyone could come in and eat in their huge grand dining hall. It was like a restaraunt.

They had this FOS that was unreal.. there as so much cheese baked on the top and all over the heavy brown pottery bowl... I don't know how the dishwashers every got it off. It was just good. I can never order FOS now, as I can't stand the dissapoitment of it not living up to the childhood memories. I may remember it being better then it really was, and I am sure some of it was the grand surroundings, but I seem to recall it was the best dish I have ever had before and since.

Panera but there isn't one in the city. There is one on Kercheval in GP, that's probably the closest one to downtown. I discovered it a couple days ago.

Hoots Bar (Hoops? Hoots?) on Michigan Ave down the street from the Lager House has French Onion soup. It's a crappy sports bar with bad service, but they have French Onion soup and it's downtown. The soup is good.

The Caucus Club has a baked onion soup. I can't remember it myself. Not sure if that's their version of French onion.

If there are still any Flying Machine restaurants in the area, they had awesome FOS. Thick, stringy cheese over croutons...darn..now I want some...hard to find here in Minnesota except at Woodlands Steakhouse at Grand Casino Mille Lacs.

So, I have never experienced Vivio's. What is teh menu like there? Seeing how I have walked by it weekly without even stepping in, i think I should at least give it a taste or 2.

I like Zoup!-I go to the Pontiac location-but their French Onion seemed to have a serious cheese deficit. I'll make sure to ask them to pile it on the next time I'm there. :-)
