Drove past the building at West Grand and Woodward and noticed they put the lettering on the side of the building for the new central precinct station.

Had no idea they were moving there. There were squad cars parked in the back lot, so the move is starting. Any idea what sort of work they had to do that took two years before they moved?

Is that the old MI Ddept. of Labor Building? It used to be HQ for one of the auto companies and has some nice architectural touches inside. The state spent a bit on restoring it in the 90s, the shut it down and talked about demoing the building. What a waste that would hab=ve been.

Not that I could find- I was hoping someone else had a scoop.

The previous thread has a picture of the building in it. It's on the northeast corner of Woodward and West Grand.

That would be the Albert Kahn designed Boulevard Building of circa 1914.

It once had a beautiful white terra cotta facade with tall floor to ceiling windows. All that ended in what has to be one of the worst rehabs in Detroit at some point in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century.

^^^ That'd be the one. I'll try to take some pictures on my trek home. Traffic's always so busy at that intersection, I'm always worried about getting side swiped.

^ Good luck. Park and go onto the median, unless you go after 6 in which case you can take a pic while you cruise by doing 5mph

If you look at the thread about old Detroit movie houses, you will see several pictures of the old Ford Service bldg. as it was next to the Regent theater.

Gee, nothing says "safe and secure" like passing by the Detroit Police Department's new "Central District Building," complete with boarded up windows, soot covered windows and rust stains ... The DPD probably should have waited till they spruced up the building a little before putting pretty neat little sign up ...

If I were in need of emergency assistance, I'd rather see a soot covered building with boarded up windows and sign on it vs one without :-D

Just drove past again today and saw the main entrance is actually on West Grand, not the boarded up corner entrance. Looks open for business. Maybe that corner unit is actually a separate unit for another business?

I have no doubt the old building was sold in short order. That's a great location, given its proximity to the campus and the new South University Village development.

And you know, everyone complains about the Secretary of State offices, but that one was hands-down one of the worst in Michigan.

I'm just glad to see that the building is being used for something. It was always so depressing to go in there and realize that the building seemed to be completely empty save for the Secretary of State.

One of the local cops told me the old central district (13th precinct) was sold to the owner of Fishbones. He told the cops the building will be demolished and he will build another restaurant/club. That it will definitely NOT be a Fishbones (another name/atmosphere).

Restaurant discussed here:
https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/89914/104763.html

I wish they planned to keep the old building. How cool to have it in a former police station:

"Table for two please in the lockup!"

Awesome - I love it when a building can be re-used, even if it isn't the prettiest in the world.

With all the new places opening in the casinos and the Book Cadillac and Fort Shelby hotels, the restaurant market in Detroit may be becoming over saturated. After all, eating out is one of the first casualties of a bad economy.
