What happened to Union Street? I loved it there. They are as expensive as going to the Joe now. When I asked the bartender why they raised their pries so much, she replied, "We're no longer Cass Corridor, we're midtown!" Wow!

I'd rather have a Nutblaster at Motor City Brewing Works. Half Nut Brown Ale with half Ghettoblaster. Most satisfactory!

$5??? It's Union Street for the luv'a...!

You'd think you were at Joe Louis Arena or Comerica Park with that price for a beer.

Shit, whatever Bell's product is on tap at Whiskey in The Jar in Hamtramck is cheaper than that garbage. The Norwalk Combo was the best, though: Two pitchers of High Life (Champipple) and a pack of Marlboros for $10. Sure do miss "Fast" Eddie.

It's times like this that I really miss ol' Verne's down in the Cass Corridor... when it was still the CASS Corridor.

New name= new prices... sheesh.

That's not gentrification. That's greed!

From the land of $4 Miller Lite pints,

Is the price increase because of popularity or inflation?

From an article I was reading earlier today:

quote:

Beer makers have been forced to raise their prices because of the skyrocketing price of hops – one of the principle ingredients. The price of hops has gone from about $4 a pound in September to $40 a pound. The price of barley, beer’s other main ingredient, has nearly doubled.

Pizza and beer now cost an arm and a leg

If you're buying Miller or Bud products, you are paying extra for the massive advertising campaigns of these companies. Its a form of mass brain washing, convincing people that these are good beers. Better to order a local or import craft brew, made with good ingredients.

I dropped into the Cass Cafe on Thursday and I'm pretty sure they had Black Labels for $1. It ain't Motor City Ghettoblaster (yum), but hey, beer for a buck, can't beat that.
And only a few short blocks from the fashionable Union Street area of Midtown.

When I'm on the cheap, which is quite often these days, I always go for Black Label, Pabst, or Blatz. Made basically the same as Miller/Bud, I think they even taste better.

Do Miller and Bud actually use hops??? It sure as hell doesn't taste like it!

Most domestic lagers use rice malt (not barley) because it's cheaper. There was a big fiasco when Germany hosted the World Cup, and Budweiser was a major corporate sponsor. Until the Bavarian Purity Law was lifted just a few years prior, Budweiser was in effect illegal in Germany.

With that said, there is NO excuse to charge $5 for a Miller Lite in Detroit. Ugh.

gentrification started in the corridor like at least 10 years ago, its just that no one was paying too much attention.
how long ago was the empowerment zone thing? i can't afford to go to union street, and i was at the majestic last night and they raised their prices as well, not as high though. i will also stick with the bronx, gotta say i dig that place, and the old miami in the summer time...

have to add a quick note
can not believe how dumb our officials are...lets see try to bring in outside folks to live in 200,000 dollar condos, open a few casinos, and then fire a huuuge chunk of our of our police force. makes no sense to me.  i don't get it. not at all.
they are jeopardizing everyone's safety around here.
it sucks.

but back to beer prices...that sucks too!

Wow, they should lose their sellin' miller privileges.

Do they have any good specials there to make up for this?

I just called down there ... just to double check the facts ... yup, 5 bucks for a pint of Miller Light.

I said, "Are you serious? Do you sell a lot of Miller at that price?" "All day long" came the answer.

I guess a fair price is whatever people are willing to pay. I'm not willing to pay $5 for Miller anything.

miller lite at the bronx 2.50
old miami 3.00
majestic 3.25
jumbos
2.25

ok ok i go to to many bars.

i like miller lite. she does me fine. and low cal.
not a big fan of strong beer flavor. but i do like my occasional bass.
another great thing about the bronx is they have a license to sell beer to go, and at a buck fifty a pop, i find it safer than going to my neighborhood party store.
