I hope they clean-up the riverfront first, so that work can begin on a completed Riverwalk.

Bettis/Betters gets 3-year extension for Uniroyal site cleanup

If the two projects announced at the end of the article are any indication, midtown continues to boom.

Funding has been secured for development of the Riverwalk connection from Gabriel Richard park, under the Belle Isle Bridge and past the Uniroyal site to the completed Mt. Elliott park portion. This will not have to wait on the clean-up of the entire Uniroyal site:

This is gonna cost a pretty penny to clean up this super-fund site. This will get worked on once they get the funding up to clean up the site. Probably gonna take a while considering the city & states financial situation. Maybe they should ask King Kwame for some cash, Ha!

The final deal on the clean-up costs has not yet been struck. Supposedly, they are close, but the two sides have been saying that since Dennis Archer was mayor. The absence of a clean-up deal has been part of the problem with the Betters/Bettis development getting off the ground in the past two years. But even if the site was pristine, the recent housing market problems probably would have precluded much progress.

The state will be paying some of the clean-up costs for the site. The city might still have to pony up some money too. The polluters and their successors are paying most, but not all the cost. Negotiation about the clean-up responsibility has dragged on for more than ten years. It is a case study for government lawyers on how not to handle a clean-up case, and it is a brilliant example for defense lawyers on how to create issue after issue to produce delay and save money for their clients.

Sad to say, but Betters/Bettis will probably need the entire 3 year extension to even begin construction.

lol :-)

Yeah, why not make Michelin/Uniroyal clean it up?

We sure didn't pollute that land!
