That first photo looks like Main St. looking north between Hudson and Harrison -- a block north of Holiday Market. |

Nor do the photographs give enough hints as to what was burned down as well. |

That's right near where they were going to tear a building down...wonder if that was it (a controlled explosion). |

That wasn't a fire. Looks like a tear down and the FF are there to water down the debris so as to cut down on the dust and debris flying and to avoid a fire. In the one picture there is a little Bobcat type construction vehicle. They wouldn't have that in there during an active fire. Also all of the debris seems to be in a nice pile. That doesn't happen during a fire. (Message edited by detroitteacher on March 21, 2008) |

It's nothing on Main Street, I think DT is correct. It must be off one of the streets - there are a lot of little factories and buildings down there. |

Correct, a tear down. New loft development with a semi-reuse of an existing building. |

Okay guys, I'll let you know what it was. Although all of this speculation is much more fun than what this really was. As I was traveling home yesterday afternoon, i spied a helicopter orbiting over a column of black smoke. I had to change directions, and I found myself heading down Main street in Royal Oak. Those of you who said this occurred at a building rehab (or tear down), are correct. I'm not sure how the fire started, but the R.O.F.D. was called to the scene and I was there with my omnipresent camera. I wish it could have been more than this, but at least I got a laugh out of the post. This building is located directly behind the Martinizing cleaners on Main and Hudson. |

It's an older building somebody tried to rehab, then they ran out of money halfway through. The city condemned it and ordered it demolished. Why do people with no money buy buildings? Or houses ... |

To sit on them until someone wants to buy it from them at a profit. |

Normally they are trying to make money. But for those who haven't done this or haven't been in business before it looks fairly easy. But for those with no experince some under estimate the cities and regulations of rehabbing and go broke. While I am a believer in inspections and rules, I am sick of fees and too damn many rules which run the average person broke. |

Hummm...I'm sorry if you are one of those who got into this project (or one like it), only to get "burned", Fnnm400. I had a pal who built out a building in RO and had a hell of a time with all the regulations and such. But in the end it was worth it, and the building is now safe and making (a little) money. |

Nope, not into developing properties. I just know the politics and problems with dealing in this type stuff. If you go in underfunded you are really screwed. For the person that has guts but not emough money government can be rough on them. If you look around many projects like this fail due to this very problem. |

Do you have any more info on that fire, Spacemonkey. I had no idea Chosen Books burned (I live under a rock, ask wifey). Danny, that "little blighted section" near downtown RO is but a speck, if it is to be compared to some of the other surrounding communities (with exceptions, of course). I am sure Detroit would love to have Royal Oak's blight. PS Admin: Would future posts of this nature (fires) be better suited posted under the “Firehouses” mega thread? |

I tried The Daily Tribune archives and I couldn't find it in there. The Daily Tribune is located in Royal Oak. Maybe if someone called the R.O. Fire Dept....? |

I walked by and it must have been a warehouse directly behind Martinizing Cleaners. The building has loading ramps still around the lot. About half of the cement structure is still standing. I'm not sure what the project is/was? If no News coverage was found--i'm sure it wasn't a total loss. |
