There is a convincing argument that Hal Newhouser is the most talented and accomplished professional athlete born and raised in Detroit. Does anyone know where he was born and what schools he attended before he signed with the Tigers in 1939? Thank you very much. |

"There is a convincing argument that Hal Newhouser is the most talented and accomplished professional athlete born and raised in Detroit" I wouldn't put Newhouser ahead of Dave DeBusschere. Newhouser was a Wilbur Wright graduate and I've heard he was raised around Fenkell & Linwood area. |

Uh, with all due respects to the Prince, but aren't we overlooking Joe Louis? Okay he wasn't born here, but he grew up and achieved international fame here. There will also be some argument that Newhouser had his peak years during the war years when bats the caliber of Ted Williams and others were out of the lineup and in the service. Nonetheless, a stellar career. |

I know that for a while he resided in a beautiful home in Franklin. It looked like a small castle up on a hill as you drove down Franklin Road. |

Hal Newhouser's home was very close to the Franklin Elementary School where I went through the sixth grade. At one time Franklin was the home of Newhouser and Al Kaline. |

Hal Newhouser was a scout for the Astro's and quit when he passed on his recommendation to draft Derek Jeter. |

Hal Newhouser was signed by the Tigers out of high school--Wilbur Wright Trade School (later Murray-Wright High). |
