Erector Set... Also known as "Destroy your fingertips with this little wrench and nuts and bolts". Still, it was fun. |

The Hasbro Merlin was one of the first electronic games with a PROM chip that I can remember.
And the Whamo Air Blaster would always keep the pets on edge!
Great thread for the Tuesday Blues. |

We had something like that Air Blaster only it was longer and shaped like a bazooka. It would fire a vortex of air like a smoke ring. I believe it was one of the first safety-obsession toys. It was cool though. My erector set almost ate my finger. For some reason I stuck my finger in the gearbox of the motor. The blood blister lasted for a month. We used Dad's block & tackle to run a homebrew elevator up into the tree. |

I had this wax car factory. You dropped some wax into a crucible, and it was heated by a light bulb. When it was melted, you put some axles and wheels into a mold, and turned a crank which moved the mold under the crucible, and tilted the crucible so it would pour the wax into the mold. Wait a few minutes for it to cool, and you had yourself a toy car you made yourself! Get tired of your car? Break it into pieces, melt it down, and make a different one! That was a killer toy. |

Jimaz - Found this on my Whamo search. It's on the Consumers Report hall of fame site. Looks like a little sister killer.

Bigb23, thanks! That's it. Wow. That would be a shocking picture if you didn't know it was a toy! I saved it. It's bound to come in handy some day. Do you know the name of that gun? |

My dad and I used to play "Over the house Bocce". The name explains it all. Mom didn't care for the game. |

Whittier70, What's Hugo? I bought just the puppet piece at a garage sale because I saw Pee Wee Herman use it in a skit in his HBO special. He called it Dr. Mondo. |

Oh I loveeeeeeeee this topic. I recently sold my entire Mego doll and playset collection and along with my tv toys from the 50's 60's and 70's . Wow,, I just love toys and all of the fond memories that go along. I know everyone here is a fan of the Sears Christmas Wishbook that all kids looked through for hours on end. |

Here's a toy I still have. Dr. Nim was a mechanical computer that used marbles to play the game of "21 Matches" astonishingly well. The box:
Dr. Nim in action (click him):
As a child I totally mastered every aspect of this machine independently discovering modular arithmetic in the process. The only purpose of that central "Nike swoosh" switch was to force Dr. Nim to make a mistake because, otherwise, he's too damn good at the game! There's a simple trick to beating him though. You can win a lot of money playing this game in a bar. (Message edited by Jimaz on April 03, 2008) |
