A discarded piece of paper found in Detroit's decaying train depot tells the story of a man, a landmark, a city. There is Photo-Story of the search as well as an old Detroit News Pictorial of the station. http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.d ll/article?AID=/20080404/SPECI AL01/804040415 |

Did you see the other article about Matty Moroun saying that MCS might be done being used for movies? |

The part of the article about Henry Fords $5 work day says it all about how we are back pedaling on the middle class of today. "The American middle class was born, it thrived and now it totters. Consider that today a newly hired autoworker will make $14 an hour or $112 for an eight-hour day. Adjusted for inflation, that is $5.19 in 1914 money. A 19-cent raise in 94 years." |

bigb23: ...and a BIG oversimplification. I'm pretty sure that "19 cent raise in 94 years" isn't factoring in health and pension costs. But that's easy to overlook, because it doesn't get in the way of his sentiment. |

Considering that Henry had on site low cost family Medical clinics and was at the fore front for preventative health care for his employees and families, not too far off the mark. I'm sure you've heard of the Henry Ford Medical System here abouts. Don't forget the schooling offered by the company too. |

"There's still a lot of good in Detroit; don't be discouraged," she said. "You're all going to make it." |

I'm a fan of Charlie LeDuff's work. There's a lot to write about in Detroit, and all of us will benefit from his writings. |

Compare Henry Ford's (or one of his VPs) salary 94 years ago with the counterpart today... |

Hate to be the lone downer here, but I actually thought that article was overly sentimental and kind of pointless. What did anyone learn about MCS or Detroit that you didn't know before? That both things used to be grand and now they ain't? So what? The one interesting part was that comparison of 1914 and 2008 wages at Ford. Just shows how much "progress" we've made. It was funny that the guy's name was R. Kelley, though. |

Jsmyers- This is just for the last thirty years, it was even closer before then. (sorry for the resolution, I don't know the end around).

I enjoyed that piece. That he tracked down the gentleman's widow from a piece of paper was really surprising. Also, I knew Matty Moroun was rich and reclusive, but I didn't realize he was a billionaire. I'm not saying anything new, but the fact that he has all that money and allows the MCS to sit in that deplorable condition is absolutely sickening. He is a disgrace and clearly has no soul. |

"but I actually thought that article was overly sentimental and kind of pointless." Mel, the fun of the article was in the chase. I do it all the time with my genealogy hobby, such as locating Civil War letters written by my cousins. The letters are the usual chatter, but the chase in finding them and then their relationship to me was a fun puzzle that occupied me for some time. So for me, even the chase of only forty years was fun to read about. I challenge you to try it sometime. See if you can find who your great great grandfathers were. I dare ya! |

Talk about creepy, my sister was getting rid of some junk around the house and she plugged in an old answering machine to test it before tossing it. The outgoing message was still on it. It really tore her up hearing my dad's voice, he's been dead since '94. |

I thought that story was boring as well. I hoped the initial dullness might herald a great payoff but the end was a snooze, too. |

It's a story about people, places and history. R. Kelley contributed to the lives of others by doing his job serving people. What a great way to show an interest in the now-elderly and what they contributed to the D back in their days there. I'm sure it was a priceless find for Mr. Kelley's widow. |
