I went to grosse pointe as a kid....................and was literally escorted back to the Detroit border by a police officer on an elite scooter, just for riding my bike into gp. Aren't there laws or something against that now?

I participated in a student exchange there...about this time last year. One of the most beneficial experiences of my high school career...

Both of my kids graduated from GPN, my daughter in '95 and son in '00. One thing about the GP high schools: you could always tell whether you were in the student parking lot or the faculty lot. The kids drove nicer cars.

GPN was located on land owned by two very elderly Belgian bachelor brothers whose land was taken by eminent domain. They were allowed to keep their house. This may have been the last farm in Wayne County. Rumor was that once they had shot trespassers with salt shot. I don't have any idea if that was true but the rumor sufficed to keep kids from picking their apples. Something should have been named after the old guys whose land was confiscated. Everyone is supposed to be preserving farmland until the government takes it I guess.

I was a full time janitor at GPN the summer before it opened and worked their 20hrs./wk when I had to go back to Wayne State in the fall. Michigan state law required a man to operate the dishwashing ($35,000) machine. Female employees scraped the plates and stacked them. A Greek lady ran the cafeteria and showed me how I could grab 4 steaming plates at a time off the end of the dish washer to save time.

GPN Class of '05, one of my favorite memories was when some dude was tailgating before a field trip, put his hot grill back in his Jeep and lit the car, along with a couple others on fire, great distraction from school. At least nobody got hurt.

I grew up in the early 70's on Vernier road... I actually remember the farm that sat on the land that GPN was built on. There was a suspicious fire that burned down the farmhouse (or maybe it was the barn) just as the property was being taken by eminent domain. I seem to remember people thinking it was deliberately set to destroy the place so it could be more easily acquired by the city to build the high school on.

Didn't go there. But back when I played High School hockey in the Metro we played GPN and GPS...both really good teams, usually beat GPN...usually split with GPS...Late 90's...so now I have limited myself to one of 10 schools in the metro-detroit area ;)

I was class of 80. The story about the Vanderbush brothers sure has changed over the years. When I was a kid, the story was that they sold the land for a $1 million, but never changed their lifestyle. I just did a quick check on the GP News archives and in 1964 when they were first talking about it, the brothers' lawyer was asking $30,000 an acre for the 29.5 acres which today is almost $6 million. The school board was offering $17,000 an acre which is over $3 million today. I didn't find the amount that they actually agreed on, but they weren't ripped off.

Soomka1 and other older graduates,

Did any of you have or know a teacher named Mr. Gwinnell? I am of relation but he died of cancer back in 1984 and I was not able to really get to know him. If you have anything to contribute, I would greatly appreciate it!

Postbop, I remember your relative Mr. Gwinnell very well. He was my civics teacher in 9th grade. He was a great guy. He knew how to run a classroom. He was a pretty easy going guy and had a good sense of humor, but he always had the room under control. He had either a Boston or New York accent and I think he mentioned being in the military during the Korean War. Is that right? I am surprised to hear that he died in 1984, he must have still been pretty young.

Oladub, That farm was not even close to being the last one in Wayne county. In fact, there are still farms in Wayne county mostly in the Southern and far Western areas.

4 sons all graduates of GPN. Fine education there. Two doctors and two engineers. Had they studied harder, they might have been trial lawyers like the old man. But I guess should not expect perfection in your kids.

I know a few students from the school, but I can easily say GPS is much better. I can't really explain it, I just like South a lot better than north.

My younger sis is still in school, the last big development that happened at north happened last year when a few individuals from another school (can't recall the school) somehow got into the school and decided to fight anyone in sight.

Those were Harper Woods kids, but I understand that there are two sides to the story.
The last "big developments" at GPN are that the girls' basketball team are State champs and the students just completed successful performances of "Guys and Dolls".
