No. 1 in auto theft: Modesto, Calif.

Top ten metro areas by per capita auto theft rate for 2007

1. Modesto, Calif.
2. Las Vegas/Paradise, Nev.
3. San Diego/Carlsbad/San Marcos, Calif.
4. Stockton, Calif.
5. San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont, Calif.
6. Laredo, Texas
7. Albuquerque, N.M.
8. Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale, Ariz.
9. Yakima, Wash.
10. Tucson, Ariz.

Compare to Five most expensive cities for auto insurance

1. Detroit, MI: $5,162
2. Philadelphia, PA: $4,142
3. Newark, NJ: $3,482
4. Los Angeles, CA: $3,225
5. New York City, NY: $3,127

Guess we can't blame car thefts for our high insurance. Perhaps factors like no fault insurance, large number of uninsured drivers play bigger roles than the number of car thefts in determining car insurance rates.

$5,162 for car insurance??? I live in Detroit and only pay $1,100 for my 2003 Mercury Sable with full collision and high deductibles.

Sounds to me like more folks in Detroit need $500-$1,000 deductibles. I know I can't afford not to have a high deductible.

Odd, the entire top 10 is the West and Southwest. Why is that?

That insurance.com article is messed up. It also says Michigan has moderate prices for gas and shows it around $2.60 a gallon.

Michigan is now near or at the top for highest average per gallon price for gasoline.

Doesn't have to be stolen to make a costly insurance claim. Broken windows, stolen airbags, sawed of catalytic converters, stolen wheels, etc.

Accident repairs aren't cheap anymore. With the way cars are designed to collapse for safety nowadays any major accident repair on a newer car has a huge price tag.

Don't forget the Sam Berstein's of the world chasing every ambulance for a huge settlement. That plays a large part in zip code based insurance rates.

Usually when someone claims they are for the little guy there is usually 1 winner and thousands and thousands of losers whose rates go up.

People in Arizona claim their auto thefts are feeding Mexican chop shops. How they get them over the border might make an interesting story.

I can't imagine what California's problem is. Those are some pretty startling statistics.

I would imagine that theft of cars for resale in the Mexican market may be a factor in the high rate of thefts in CA and the SW. Mexico just changed its vehicle-import laws, making it essentially impossible to legally import used cars within a certain age range other than for one particular model year.

Umm...

The first list is by "Metro Area."

The second is by "City."

This helps explain some of the discrepancy.

Don't fret.... If the first list were by city, I'm sure that Detroit would realize her rightful place near the top of that list.

The second list doesn't say how (or when) they got their numbers.

Yes, the stolen cars in the Southwest mostly go to Mexico.

They are called "chocolates" in Mexico, and are prized because the roads and maintenance are better in the U.S.

Detroit is near the top in 2006 (only preliminary 2007 data released for 2007). Surprisingly Harper Woods (MI), Commerce (CA) and Oakland (CA) have higher rates of auto theft than Detroit. St. Louis is very close.

Harper Woods’ high rate of auto theft is probably attributable almost solely to Eastland. My aunt worked there in the 80s & 90s, and had her car stolen twice . . .and vandalized countless times.

I just renewed my auto insurance. I switched companies to AAA and now pay $950 a year for full coverage. In fact I was able to up my coverage on the amount I am covered for.

I suggest that you who live in the City get on the horn and call AAA.

Sorry, did't read a lot of the posts. But it did get me thinking. When Ron and I married we signed up with AAA. He was 23 and I was 21. We lived in the burbs for 8 years. Found out by accident, ten years later we were paying the rate as if we were under 21. We asked for a rebate for all those years of being over charged.
They pretty much said, Go F..., yourself. We switched to Statefarm and had a good relationship for many years. Then they got greedy. Strangely, we are back with AAA.

Best rates for communities (we have lived in the past 35 years) were Northville and GPP. Worst rates were Macomb Twsp.

We now live in EEV, Detroit. We pay about $800 per annum for PLPD for a 97 vehicle with super low mileage, rates seems high, given perfect driving records and no coverage on our vehicle.I do believe our rates are inflated.

Thats why you have to actually READ the renewal declaration when it comes in the mail. Most people just toss it aside and forget about it...until they have a loss.
