That is precisely what I was looking for. I guess the area I lived in..between Morang and Moross, and between Harper and Kelly doesn't have a name. Thanks for posting the link. |

Hmmm, it doesn't seem to work with Firefox... does it work better with Internet Explorer? Neat map, though. |

Yes works with IE. Grumpy, I'm pretty sure that area has signs that say, "Detroit Area Residents East" and maybe it only applies further south, but Balduck Park Neighborhood. |

I lived in the boundaries mentioned from 1979 to 1990. Back then our neighborhood association was called "Neighbors United", I never liked that name. D.E.A.R became East English Village and Morningside I think was called N.E.A R. |

D.A.R.E I think was the triangal formed by Mack, Cadieux and Warren. The boundaries may have included Harper and Moross. D.A.R.E included Balduck Park. |

The area in the borders of I-94, Cadieux, Mack and Kingsville (2-3 blocks north of Moross) make up Cornerstone Village. We recently changed the name from Organized Neighbors East (O.N.E.). This is the area that includes Balduck Park. I thought D.A.R.E. was west of I-94 at Moross |

I'm in the Plymouth/Greenfield area, and the deed to the house calls the area "Churchill Park." I never hear that term used, but that's what the deed says. |

Jcole...I lived on Wayburn between Morang and Casino. From 1949 to 1989...with a couple years at other Detroit locations..Neff, Cedargrove, Grover and Alcoy. The home on Wayburn belonged to my parents and we took it over when Mom moved into a the Babcock Whitehill co-ops. |

Grumpy, my grandparents lived on Alcoy - 18502. I remember the address, the big oak trees that tunneled the street, kids in their hot rod cars and loud mufflers. A number of years ago, after my grandma moved, the house next door to her exploded (drugs i think). Quite a change from the innocent late 50's and 60's that I remember. |

Yahoo! Maps has certain neighborhoods colored in, but they don't cover the entire city. I think it would be an interesting project to try to get as many neighborhoods "defined" as possible. I did something like this for Southwest Detroit on Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms ?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=1102 88158976987503712.000448ec1134 cee33a125&ll=42.343828,-83.095 264&spn=0.061663,0.116043&z=13 &mid=1209270519 I didn't include each and every so-called "neighborhood" such as Hubbard Farms, Vernor-Junction, etc. because I think those act more as "districts" within each neighborhood. I also didn't really know what to call some of the neighborhoods. I chose Condon and Chadsey because that is what the city defines for those areas. I chose Cecil-Mcgraw, because that is a relatively busy intersection near the center of the neighborhood. |

I also did one for the Far West Side. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms ?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=1102 88158976987503712.0004494d2bda e81851622&z=12 It's not done, and it's only a guess... |

I've been trying to isolate the various neighborhoods in Detroit for a long time too. The maps in question, esp the Cityscape site mentioned above, are helpful, but as Grumpyoldlady mentioned, that far east side neighborhood between Kelly & Harper, Morang & Kingsville, does not have a name on any maps - not even a "street-corner" neighborhood name (like 7-Gratiot). The closest I can come to our old neighborhood (I lived on Laing between Moross & Morang), is the name "Denby" on some city maps. We never called our neighborhood that when we lived there, but it's an appropriate name considering the location. Balduck Park seems to be the name for area between Harper & Mack. Other east side names that never existed when I was a kid were East English Village and Morningside. We just called it Warren & Outer Drive. Good luck finding all the neighborhoods. There are still several I'm trying to define, such as the lower east side area between Harper & Mack, St Jean & the Blvd. Since that area has deteriorated so much, no maps ever list it - just some of the more popular neighborhoods nearby, like Indian Village, West Village, East Village and Islandview. |

I have no idea why its called "The Eye". In fact, I rarely venture to the West Side, so my "knowledge" of these neighborhoods is through online resources, and in reality I'm justing making up "boundaries" for a lot of them. To most people "Old Redford" is just the intersection of Grand River and Lahser. I took the surrounding area that isn't aligned with the traditional street-grid, as I assumed that represents the built environment of the area prior to the suburban expansion into the area. In reality neighborhood "boundaries" are irrelevent, but I think it would be nice to have some kind of idea of the extent of the different neighborhoods. |

I lived on Junction Avenue between Herbert and Horatio near the newly created I-94. We did not have a name for the neighborhood which extended to Michigan and Livernois (Bloomer Building of the Boys Club of America at Livernois and Michigan to the Conley Branch of the Detroit Public Library on Martin and Michigan, wish I could walk that far today). The area also included St. Hedwig, St. Cecilia, Holy Redeemer and St. Franci of Assisi Catholic Churches, the only ones I knew at the time, including bars on every corner, anyone remember the Skyliner on Campbell. New names of neighborhoods, I think, is a relatively new phenomenon within the last 25 years or so. It gives an area an identity and cohesiveness so that the City government can be approached to provide needed services to a defined area and so that neighbors know who their immediate neighbors are. From the above post Churchill Park sounds pretty good. Time for a new neighborhood organization. |

I think "The Eye" came from the posters that proclaimed that a property was being watched. These posters had a big eye on them. I think this was a really early use of this symbol. |

We had a kids softball league for years in 'The Eye' neighborhood, the Redford Park Athletic Association. When the neighborhood watch program was started, it was named 'the eye',apparently someone decided it ought to be the neighborhood name? Unofficially, Redford Park was the neighborhood name.I'll ask my parents if their deed has an actual neighborhood name. Side note- A house I owned near Lola valley in Redford Twp- the deed mentioned the property was in 'B.E. Taylor's Brightmoor Subdivision #2' |
