Just curious if anybody has ever stayed at Corktown Inn. I have some relatives coming for the weekend and they are looking for something cheap downtown - no frills, really just a place to sleep. They don't care about any amenities at all & this location is perfect. Anybody?? |

Have not stayed there but it would be my next to last choice (after the Leland). Call the motels on Jefferson-Shorecrest, Comfort Inn, Day's Inn, etc. You'll pay about $89 per night and get a better quality room and environment-also breakfast restaurants nearby or on-site. You can also try bidding around 69-79 for a two star hotel on Priceline and end up with the Comfort Inn or similar. |

I've heard that The Corktown in is full of hookers and people doing drugs on the weekend. I had a friend who stayed there last summer and left quickly after about 2 hours. |

I lived at the Leland for 3.5 years. I don't recommend it. I don't know about the Corktown Inn (Cracktown Inn?) though. Maybe it's awesome. ?? |

Any motel where you can purchase women's panties out of a vending machine can't be all bad right? |

Um, do they really have such a vending machine there? And you do mean clean undies for the hookers, right? |

Thanks, all - looks like the Corktown Inn is out of the running. I was just curious - these relatives are not coming to see me, they merely called me for a recommendation. Since one of them loves Mexican Town, I thought that hotel might be nice if it were decent. |

my family stayed there for my wedding. there were some dirty room mishaps when they got in, but overall, they were fine with it. my husband and a few in the bridal party thought that it was run by the russian mob, tho. |

jjaba stayed there without incident. The owner was Chester and Sasha, Polish immigrants intent on making it nice, but taking some Mental Health contracts to keep the lights on. Built as a Holiday Inn on Trumbull St. hard by the balpark in the 1960s during urban renewal, it always struggled. Mickey Mantle carved notches in the bedposts after a good game of hitting homers. Pure Detroit, with sliding auto gate to parking lot. So your car and room are behind security systems. jjaba. |

Top Ten Reasons to Stay at Corktown Inn. 10. Mid-century modernism is all the rage. 9. Walk to Tiger Stadium. 8. Breakfast at Leo's Deli. 7. Near that Casino ACTION. 6. Easy on and off John Lodge Expy. with Howard exit. 5. Pray with Father Kern's statue. 4. Close to Mexicantown for dinner. 3. The strangers walking the halls. 2. Barbed wire fencing for the car. 2. Pure Detroit, that's it. jjaba, Westsider. |

When it was a Holiday Inn, was it ever used by visiting major league baseball teams, as Jjaba hinted, or was the Book Caddy always the hotel of choice? |

Most visiting teams stayed at the Book in the 60's and 70's. Some teams stayed at the Westin in the Ren Cen a few yrs after it opened. By late 80's all teams had moved to the burbs. I'm certain no team stayed at the Holiday Inn Corktown although it was a nice property when it opened. I hope some teams return to the Book. Ilitch has managed to get a few NHL teams staying at Motor City Casino but I'm quite sure the anti-gambling edicts in MLB will prevent teams from staying there. |

Most visiting teams stayed at The Leland when it was a fine place. Kids were always in the lobby seeking autographs. In Chicago, Tigers et. al. stayed at the Hotel del Prado in Hyde Park. Does the Dearborn Ritz-Carlton Hotel still cater to the visiting teams? Relatively convenient to downtown and the airport. Also, relatively segregated from downtown diversions. The Trumbull Ave. Holiday Inn was a nice property and there's the Mickey Mantle lore. Not sure about the rest of the team. jjaba, noting that Corktown Inn has VERY raunchy porn on the tv. (jjaba, getting his groove on.) |

Pollybergen, why would the Russian mob run a Corktown motel-or Polish mob, unless it's like the Strange Case of Hymie Weiss; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H ymie_Weiss Because you people expect it here's the web reviews of Ye Olde Corktown Inn; http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hot el_Review-g42139-d605656-Revie ws-Corktown_Inn-Detroit_Michig an.html http://www.expedia.com/pub/age nt.dll?qscr=dspv http://preview.tinyurl.com/6z4 7cy Jjaba, that's easy-Mantle probably got a deal because the Mickster was a Holiday Inn franchisee http://keymancollectibles.com/ miscellaneous/mickeymantlejopl inholidayinn.htm down in Joplin, MO-where he played in the minors(playing for "the Miners") though this was a few years before the Branson boom an hour south(today the Mantle Holiday Inn is a Lowe's). Joplin is one of the few places I've found an All-You-Can-Eat Waffle House which does nothing but make my Atlanta relatives jealous. I've never bothered with the "Spooklight" there-next to last trip a bagboy @ Food-4-Less said it's "crap-just a buncha hillbillies gettin' drunk" . Got it. |

Flyingj tells it like it tis. Mickey Mantle had a 50% stake in the Joplin, MO Holiday Inn of 1957. The Dugout Bar had a collection of authentic memorabilia. His partners were M/M Harold Youngman. The big sign outside said Holiday Inn, operated by Mickey Mantle. Mantle had played minor league baseball in Joplin, 1950, before going up to the NY Yankees. He was a Yankee, 1951-68, and inducted into the HOF, Aug. 12, 1974. jjaba, research dept. |

Dunno the date, 623kraw, but it sure wasn't there when Holiday Inn was the owner of the Trumbull Ave. property. The whole Bahgdad Bunker retro design of small inner city motels, Detroit or elsewhere, has changed dramatically since the times of the post-WWII designs, which were very welcoming for the auto trade that pulled up. jjaba was in Fla. for Grapefruit League and stayed around in older motels recently. You see none of this security stuff down there. jjaba, baseball fan. |

I would agree with Tarkus, the Milner sounds like your best fit. I have stayed their for around $70, and you can park at the opera house for $5. Its not fancy but clean and I felt safe. Its right next to Comerica Park. |
