Just found out today that Starbucks is going to be open now on Saturdays from 9:30a to 5:00p as a test. I think it's a great move - the Starbucks is right near Campus Martius and has a great corner location, one of the best to do well. Although some may not like chains or Starbucks, it's the kind of thing by a company that can afford to be open for awhile as a test (and not lose their shirt or risk closure, as many small ones do) to build business and traffic and other businesses can benefit from it. And, if a chain like Starbucks is willing to do a test - it means they sniff that there may actually be a market there, and investors for other projects will look at that as a positive indicator. |

Very interesting, Digital. This means Starbucks sees potential for profit based on Saturday foot traffic. And of course those poor overworked souls who are at the office on Saturday. |

That is good news. There is already a Starbucks open on weekend mornings in the Marriott at the Renaissance Center. Hopefully it works out for them. I personally would love to have a Bigbee Coffee downtown (formally Beaner's), since it is an Michigan company, but I will take Starbucks. |

IHD - Yes, but that Starbucks is far from providing the "urban" experience that I dig. That, and Casinos are boring for me, I only go for events. Bob - about the one in the Marriott, while cool that it's open and I like it's pods (no wifi, even paid - GRRRRRR), is out of the way being in Fort Powertrain (i.e. GM building). Location is everything for almost all retail, IMHO. |

Cafe Rowland in the Guardian Building is very nice. Cooler than Starbucks but the coffee at Starbucks is tough to beat. |

I've been into ABP at various times during the winter, including Saturdays, just because I like the natural light (and the skaters when they're there). I've never seen it either dead or packed--consistent business most days. On a pleasant spring Saturday there are a lot of people in the park, and some go in for coffee. |

Any place that sells caffeinated drinks, corporation or no, is ok by me. And that a chain wants to increase hours in downtown is encouraging. |

If only the Jimmy John's downtown would stay open like the college campus hours. Dreaming of a 24-hour downtown... |

More weekend, evening, and late-night places, please! Some of downtown's heaviest traffic is during non-business hours, anyway. If S-bucks publicizes this, I'm sure they'll do fine. |

"If only the Jimmy John's downtown would stay open like the college campus hours." YES! Glad to hear Starbucks will be open on saturdays. I still will take Rowland and UBC over it tho... |

Bob, I have very reliable word that Bigbee will be opening a downtown location in the not too distant future. |

I may be an idiot but where downtown is there a Starbucks? I can only think of the one at Mack and Woodward and then the ones inside places like the RenCen. Is there another one near the Compuware building that opens to the street? |

This really is good news, mostly because it's hopefully the start of a trend. I can't even count the number of times I've tried to go places downtown only to find them inexplicably closed. |
